About to change from a MSI geforceFX 5200 to a Creative GeforceFX 5700 ultra
128Mb. Normally when installing new hardware i would uninstall the drivers,
shut down the PC take out old hardware, fit new hardware, boot up comp and
install new drivers.
Is this still the best option or i am thinking that as i am still using a
Nvidia based graphics card do i actually need to uninstall existing driver
can i just replace graphics card and update drivers/software from new CD.
TIA

*MOST* nVidia cards, in my experience, will simply work if you pop 'em in
the slot, start up and install the latest GeForce Unified Driver. Should
work reasonably well.

1.. Uninstall current driver. DO NOT reboot just yet...
2.. Use some sort of nVidia cleaner..
3.. Shut down..
4.. Replace card..
5.. Boot up and new card is detected..
6.. Browse to driver and install..
Step 2 is optional but highly recommended... I am not so sure or which
cleaner to use as I have used a few and get errors, or I use them then
try them again only to see the files I was supposed to have just
cleaned, still there... A manual clenout is best but awfully hard to
perform unless you know what you are doing...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 5200 to 5700 installing ??? |

Any suggestion from either of them should be ok.
Option 1 -
From Doug:
*MOST* nVidia cards, in my experience, will simply work if you pop 'em in
the slot, start up and install the latest GeForce Unified Driver. Should
work reasonably well.
Option 2 -
From Bruce:
1.. Uninstall current driver. DO NOT reboot just yet...
2.. Use some sort of nVidia cleaner..
3.. Shut down..
4.. Replace card..
5.. Boot up and new card is detected..
6.. Browse to driver and install..
Bruce way is a good standard way. I am a lazy kind and probably would do
Doug way first. If there are too many junk, then try Bruce way.
Caution Note - Alway have a backup of your OS before you do any installation
or upgrade / update.

waste of time...
You don't need to uninstall current drivers.... Hell, install latest
drivers before upgrading Nvidia card - Drivers pick up the change and
maybe a single reboot is needed.

That is not alway true or good way of doing it. It may work but not alway.
Driver may still need to be reinstall eventhough the current driver in the
PC / OS. Reason is due to ID differences from card maker and model [yes,
even with the same maker].

Never had such a problem, as do most people. Afterall, this was the
point of Unified drivers... they work with all cards.
For testing, I've gone though a FX 5900 / 5200 and Ti4200 back and
forth on the same machines, same driver.... so the big deal is...??
Going from an ATI to Nvidia or other way around requires this for
proper operation.... must be hell when using both an ATI and Nvida at
the same time...

Like I say again,
From previous post -
>That is not alway true or good way of doing it. It may work but not alway.

Are you talking about the NVIDIA driver from the nVidia website or from the
CD disc that come bundle with the card?
Did Windows detect new hardware? If so, did it reinstall or auto-reinstall
itself from the same driver from either the CD disc or from Windows where it
store nvidia driver or from the special nvidia folder that you download from
the nvidia website where it decompress during the first installation
process?
If all your card have the same subsystem ID, then no problem, Windows would
not know the difference. But if the SubSystemID is difference, Windows will
complaint to install to match with the card with that SAME driver.
And yes, I do understand the "Unified Driver" from NVIDIA and it nature of
the drvier.
And no, I did not make any "big deal .." out of this. It just a suggestion.
