I'm looking at getting my first digital camera. I want to get a good
quality camera that will last for a long time and will be able to adequately
replace my film Canon Rebel 2000. Something in the $300-450 range would be
great. My wife and I both shoot pictures and have no particular needs other
than a good quality camera that will take pictures of sufficient quality to
blow selected pictures up to 8x10 or whatever size for framing.
I'm a "computer guy" so more features=good, if they're useful. Accompanying
software is not a big issue as I already have Photoshop and similar tools.
Could anyone look over the list below and give me some recommendations?
Also, if there are any cameras in my price range that I'm overlooking, I'd
like to know that as well.
I've looked online at Sam's Club. They seem to have two viable
alternatives:
Hewlett Packard PS 935 w/ dock for $414
Olympus C-50 for $390
Best Buy has the following alternatives:
Kodak EasyShare 5.0 DX4530 for $349
Sony Cyber-shot 5.0 DSC-P92 for $380
Olympus Camedia C-5000 Zoom for $450
Circuit City has the following alternatives:
Hewlett Packard PS 935 w/o dock for $350
Minolta DiMAGE G500 5.0 for $380
Sony Cyber-shot 5.0 DSCP10 for $450
Other stores I've looked in have similar prices for these same cameras.

Try Ebay. I bought an olympus E20 for about 2/3 retail form a reputable
dealer in New York. My daughter bought an Olympus c50 for $320.00 on Ebay.

Consider perhaps the Canon A80...not 5mp, but will hold it's own. Beach
Camera, B&H, are a good source. Also available at retail stores. Built
like a tank and really cool to operate. Picture quality is excellent. Can
do most everything a Canon G3 or G5 can do but without the hotshoe. You can
even attach aux. lens or adapter.
Price is about $399 street.
Good luck,

Price range is typically a little low for 5MP.
Pentax 450 @ 4MO is an excellent camera for a mini with all the overrides.

Well, if you want it to replace your 35mm SLR then you should try and
fork out for an SLR digital. Something like the Canon G5. I have an
older Olympus C2020Z and find all the manual controls almost useless
because I can't read the settings on the LCD in daylight conditions.
Basically it's just an expensive point and shoot DC. I now want an SLR
DC with the settings readout in the eye piece for this reason. On my
Nikon 35mm SLR I can see my metering settings without taking my eye
away from the eye piece and it should be the same on a decent DC.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: 5MP question, recommendation needed |

When you look at the LCD display, it is "through the lens". This ancient
phase will disappear once all the "old boys" are gone. Why would anybody
want to look through a mirror or otherwise non WYSIWYG optical mechanism
when taking pictures when you can look at exactly what the image will be?

Since you allready have a Canon Rebel 35m, why not consider Canon
Digital rebel, Any lens that you have are going to be interchangable.
It is outside your price range, but if you have a collection of lens,
it is something to think about.
