This is the datasheet for your AC97 codec:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.analog.com/UploadedFiles/Data_Sheets/206585810AD1980_0.pdf" target="_blank">http://www.analog.com/UploadedFiles/Data_Sheets/206585810AD1980_0.pdf</a>
Pg.10 of the document lists the capabilities of the device, and
"bass and treble" is missing.
The AC97 spec makes those controls optional.
On an A7N8X with the MCP-T, there is a DSP block in
the Southbridge, and it contains a graphic equalizer. That
is an example of how frequency shaping can be done for an
AC-97 sound system. It is also possible, that system sound
software could do DSP as well, and reshape the frequency response,
but that would be pretty wasteful of system resources.
I was hoping to find some info on devices that actually do have
base and treble, but haven't located a comprehensive list. (The
"Bass and Treble" question has come up before.) I figure the
ALSA project would be a good place to look, but their
supported hardware list seems to be broken. Driver downloads
for ALSA are here:
