Giving the old A8N-SLI Deluxe one final tune-up before switching to Quad
Core next year.
Want to buy a new hard drive.
My motherboard doesn't do SATA2, does it? So what should I be looking for?
Anything in the SATA category? I've got two SATA slots left I can fill up.
Are SATA2 drives backward-compatible? Can I use it on my A8N-SLI Deluxe and
then migrate it over to the new computer (SATA2) when the day comes? >> Stay informed about: A8N-SLI Deluxe - Does it do SATA2? |

I dont know off hand if that board does SATA2 or not , but yes, the drives are
backwards compatible so get the SATA2 drive and it will run as fast as the
motherboard will drive it, then youll have it for when you upgrade to newer
system next year.

In general sata 2 drives are backward compatible
Some people have reported probs with 'some' sata2 drives on sata1 controlers

The A8N-SLI Deluxe is supposed to support the 3Gb/s SATA rate. I think that
it may not support AHCI, but I doubt that is something that most users would
miss.
Some 3 Gb/s drives have jumpers to limit them to 1.5 Gb/s for compatibility.
(Some of the drives come jumpered to 1.5 Gb/s *by default*, which can be an
annoyance.)
I have read suggestions that WD Raptor drives (10k RPM) have problems with
mainboards that use the Intel P35 chipset, but that shouldn't be a problem
for you.
Return address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

I never got mine to work. Not sure the problem. Enabled it in the BIOS but
it never recognized the external SATA2 drive.

Different experience here with the same motherboard. It worked.
Did not use Raptor though.

Got any more info on that problem, by any chance? I've just upgraded
most of my system (to a P35 motherboard), but kept my WD Raptor, and
have been thinking that HD access "feels" a bit sluggish and weird.
Would love to get some insight, if you've got a link handy, please.
Cheers,

I probably shouldn't have written about the Raptors, as I have no personal
experience with them. (I'm too cheap, I suppose.)
The Abit forums have some quasi-information:
http://forum.uabit.com/showthread.php?t=129716
It sounds like there's no consistent failure of Raptors with P35 boards.
I've had good luck with my Abit IP35 Pro based system; even the RAID 10
array works. (I doubt that RAID was worth the trouble, but it's currently
the done thing in "enthusiast" machines.)

A8N-SLI Deluxe supports SATA2 on the NVIDIA controler but not on the Sil
Image which only can do SATA1 speed. Running two Seagate SATA2 250GB drives
in RAID 0 array. XP & Vista both see as 3.0 GBS speed.

Which is the connector in the back of the motherboard. Are you saying that
one does not support SATA2?

Usually there will be a jumper on a SATA2 drive to force SATA1 mode. Then when
you move on to a SATA2 MB, you can remove jumper back to full speed.

The nForce4 chipset doesn't do AHCI, but it does support NCQ using a
different interface (ADMA). You need the NVIDIA drivers installed to get
this, the default Microsoft IDE driver won't do NCQ.
