Mine failed this week. No strange noise; just quit, AsusProbe dutifully
reminded me. I am replacing it with a Vantec Iceberg.

This is an early Asus board (Dec 04). Has Asus improved the fan and are
they replacing the fan under warranty? Seems chipset fan failure been
higher than normal from what I have heard.

AMD 64 3500+. 1 gig ram, Antec Sonata, 6600GT

Yes, Asus will send you an improved chipset heatsink/fan if you call them.
It is a bit quieter than the original, but not as good (nor as quiet) as
aftermarket ones. The OEM heatsink/fans have height restrictions because of
an extra long adapter card that may be used, but this is not a problem for
most people, so you are better off with a aftermarket one.

I picked up a Zalman NB47J passive heatsink and it works very well.

Thanks for your thoughts. I am thinking of putting in another 6600GT and
have discovered that the heatsink might get in the way. I am going with
the Vantec Iceberg.

The Zalman passive will get in the way - it did in my rig. I had to
break off a few fins for it to fit. You'll still need a fan to blow over
that Zalman too, as it gets very hot.

I'm sure it'll be very nice.

Good point regarding chipset cooling since my card is a Leadtek 6600GT.
I plan on getting another one for SLI.

Assuming you are into gaming, can you tell me what success you are
having with games optimized for SLI? Are you pleased with your decision?
