Post subject: Asus A8N-VM CSM, no video output on onboard video

I installed this mainboard yesterday and I came across a few problems:
First I thougth that my power supply (300 Watt) was not sufficient. It
turned out that the 20-pins plug did fit in the 24 pins connector on
the mainboard and that I had to connect another 4-pin plug to the
atx12v plug to the right of the CPU. I did get my mainboard to boot.
But, the onboard video output does not work. When I connect my CRT
monitor on this output I get no display. The system does boot though.
I now plugged in a normal PCI-video card, and I see the PC boot and
recognize the memory, hard drives and CD-drives.
Does anyone have a clue how to fix this problem? |

I disconnected it for about 15 seconds. I will look into this BIOS
setting when I'm at the location again in a few days.
How about the hypothesis that the 4 pin atx12v plug doesn't provide
enough power to activate the onboard agp card? Although I still think
that the board shouldn't boot at all if there isn't enough power?
My 300W power supply provides the bare minimum, would it be wise to get

For how long did you disconnect the battery? There's a jumper beside the
battery that would have done the same CLRTC
If it is the same as the plain vanilla A8N-VM, which I have:
The graphics search order is in BIOS -> Advanced -> Chipset -> 1st
Northbridge -> NvigB../C510 Config (bottom choice)
I think you need the IGP first, if it's to be the primary display

I tried booting this board with a 300W PSU - no dice. Two beeps and that was
it. The CPU fan spun up, but no image on the monitor. Switched to a 400W and
all is good.
BTW, you should have the those video options available in your BIOS, but if
you are connected to the onboard port you should get video output regardless

Well. it turned out it was the bios settings after all. I find it
strange that it first tries to boot from a PCI device, but when not
present it doesn't switch to onboard vga automatically.
I changed the setting to IGP first and that did the trick. My 300 Watt
PSU delivers 15amps at 12V which afterall turns out to be sufficient.

Good that it's working now..
I concur that it should have.
I also find it strange that (on my A8N-VM) the choices are only
[IGP->PCI->PCI-E] and [PCI->PCI-E->IGP], but not PCI-E first..
