I am using an ASUS A8N-E with two SATA drives. I have just moved and
after a couple of weeks in my new location my computer suddenly no
longer recognized my drives.

I pressed in all the chips I could find. I reconnected the drives. I
reset the bios. I bought an adapter that allowed me to access the
drives on an old IDE back up machine. I could read well from both of
them. I tested the power supply and it tests good. The hard drives can
be heard to power up.

I am stumped. I could not find a replacement A8N-E at a reasonable
price so the next move is to replace the system. A little costly but I
may have no choice.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated

How much of the three year warranty on the motherboard remains in
effect ? Perhaps you can return the motherboard to Asus, and get
another in return.

If you look in the BIOS, do the drives seem to be detected ?

Are all heatsinks still in place on the motherboard ? Any
physical damage to the motherboard, as a result of the
move ?

Good idea, I did not think of this.

The drives are not recognized by the bios.

All seems to be ok on the board visually. It was working fine then
just quit recognizing the drives in the bios.

WTF .. press in all the chips ? most the chips are bloody surface mount on
drives !

till you find out the issue or the card put the adapter in the A8N-E in a
spare slot (don't press anything else except the adapter into the slot)

does the sata controller on the ASUS see the drives , but windows refuses to
boot them ?

did the "C" drive boot in the old machine ? what message did the ASUS give
you ,, insert system disk or something ?

get / loan a sata disk and make sure the asus will still configure drives ,
OR back up one of the sata disks and reconnect to the asus and try to
configure.

The only time I've seen this happen is when the chipset fan/heatsink on my
A8N-E went adrift and the chipset fried, strangely everything else still
worked OK.
I'd try RMA'g it with Asus if you can.

On the subject of replacements for S939 stuff motherboards really are going
for a premium, so much so I ditched all my S939 stuff for mostly more than I
paid for it on fleabay, and sold into an AM2 dual core system with a profit
too.

Thanks all for the responses. I am starting the process of trying to
get a RMA as it appears to be still in warranty.

I had the same problem. It does this once and a while. Probably chipset
overheating problem? When this happens to me, I found that if you reverse
the SATA plugs between the two hard drives it will work again. Works every
time for me!
