Hi...new here. Just setting up a new SB61G and I'm having a real pain
trying to install an AGP video card. Tried two, a Radeon 9600 PRO and
a Leadtek WinFast A340TD. Both cards crash after drivers are
installed...black screen just before the log in screen appears (W2K
Pro SP4). It was suggested that I need to install better quality RAM.
I have 2 512K sticks and I did buy "cheaper" RAM. Could this really be
the problem? Anyone with similar experience? I have read reviews of
this computer with a Radeon 9800 installed with no prob even though
the Radeon 9800 min sys req's are for a 250 - 300W power supply so I
know it can be done.....
Thanx
David DeCristoforo
PS I have tried every imaginable procedure including resetting CMOS,
installing the AGP card, booting into BIOS and disabeling the onboard
chip, reformatting the HDD, clean install if W2K, installing the
motherboard drivers (except the video) and then installing the AGP
card drivers.....Hosed!

I know I should not reply to my own posts but I got the AGP card
working. Not quite sure how tho...didn't have anything to do with the
RAM. I connected another monitor to the DVI connector and it worked
fine so I connected my KDS rad7 to the DVI connector using the adaptor
that came with the card and volia. Weird thing is, I hade done this
before and it did not resolve the problem...maybe just an anomoly.

PS Maybe time to get a digital display.....

Glad you got your system working. Lucky you! I'm in my 4th week of
trying to get an AGP card working properly with my SB61-G2.

Neither a Gainward FX5900 Ultra or a Verto Ti4600 will work: they
install OK but freeze up on either MSFlightsim2k2 or Flightsim2k4 at
any time.

But an interesting similarity with your experience is that my monitor,
an Eizo 18" Flexiscan L685 LCD refuses to detect the DVI output from
the Gainward. I'm wondering if that's a problem with the card or the
monitor. Maybe next time I connect up it'll work<g>.

I can recommend to you an LCD - I shan't go back to a CRT.

Well I don't do any games but I had a bitch of a time getting a card
working and then it just worked! Wierd. Agree on the LCD tho...no
flicker...no eye strain...one thing to keep in mind is that running
screen savers on an LCD is counter-productive.

I also am having a problem with lockups on SB61G2 and ATI Radeon 9600 Pro
.... also had problems with lockup on same system and PNY FX 5200 PRO. I am
beginning to suspect a problem with the AGP implementation. Lockups
happening during Everquest gaming. Maybe this just isn't a good enough
computer for gaming. Pity.

Yes, my own SB61-G2 project has been a bit of a disappointment using
Gainward FX5900 and also GeForce Ti4600 cards. I expected to get some
really good results with good frame rates on MS FS2ks and FS9 but I've
been in Freeze City ever since. No BIOS or driver updates have
improved things.

Maybe in future I'll buy my PCs ready-made.

Many reviewers have praised this computer's performance with high end
graphics cards installed. Keep in mind that I was not experiencing
lock-ups. My system was booting fine but the monitor was losing the
signal so that the screen would go black. I could still hear the
start-up chime, just no picture. Since I do not run games, I can't
address that, but programs like Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator,
Dreamweaver / Fireworks are running fine.

I wasn't able to get my SB61G2 to work with the 200W power supply. My system
specs are:
P4 3.0 GHz
1GB Kingston Ram 2x512
TDK DVD R/W
7 in 1 Media R/W
ATI AIW 9800 Pro

I wasted time and money with Shuttle support which had me replace my power
supply with another one, it had the same results. The Shuttle site states
that the SB61G2 works with ATI AIW 9800 Pro but I believe that the power
supply cannot support the load. Although some people have reported they got
it to work, they are probably near the max load of the power supply and will
experience weird problems such as resets, crashes, or complete failures. My
only solution was to hook up a regular ATX 350W power supply to my system
(it doesn't look good at all). I tested out the system with 3DMark2003,
BF1942, and MS FS 2004 for several hours and it worked great. I have asked
Shuttle if they will be supplying a higher wattage power supply but only get
ignored with standard replies to return my power supply or that it's an ATI
problem.

If you read the min sys req's for the 9800 it says you need a MIN. of
250w with 300w recomended. This is the case with most new "high end"
video cards. I think it may depend on how many other devices you have
on your sys that draw power from the ps. The older Shuttles only had a
150w ps and mine used to crash if I had a modem card installed! If I
used an external modem which had it's own power cord...no prob.
DD
PS neither of the cards I tried required a power connection and it was
still a bitch to get one working. Now that it is tho, the computer
seems stable.
PPS Maybe you could stash the external ps. Like screw it to the
underside of the desk or something...Smile

The Shuttle SB61G2 is a nice machine, but I was having problems with it.
Symptom was lockups while gaming, Everquest. System had Radeon 9600 Pro
for graphics and SATA Maxtor drive. Everytime lockup happened, disk light
stuck on. Also, after lockup, system would appear to "forget" the type of
the SATA drive until a reboot or two reset DMI data (I guess). Maxtor
Powermax utility wasn't able to test SATA drives because their standalone
floppy utility didn't have support for SATA drives on Shuttle, apparently -
too new. Anyhow I got to suspecting immature BIOS support for SATA. I
also suspected heat, power problems.

Clean reinstall of Win XP Pro helped somewhat, but still occasional lockup.

Delighted to find a BIOS update posted on Shuttle website for SB61G2, Oct 7.
Reflashed using Winflash, and now system won't post at all. Beware,
beware. I think Shuttle screwed up, and that is not the BIOS for that
system, but rather perhaps for the SB65G2, which appears to be the machine I
SHOULD have bought (no built-in graphics, 220W power, bigger cooling vents
on sides).

Don't be the first to flash!
