I put together a new system with above m/b,with bare bones I can`t get it to
boot properly. When I power on the h/d light flickers briefly, the f/d is not
been detected,no beeps from system speaker though it does make a brief
noise, monitor light continues to flash amber green.CD rom starts fine.I`ve
played around with the wires and the connectors ie trying them alternate
ways.I`ve tried a different stick of ram,different video card,the h/d works
in other system set as a slave. The m/b cpu and fan are new as my old Abit
KA7 blew its caps over aperiod of time,my system froze last week and with a
hard reboot it wouldn`t start hence my current situation.
On reading a post dated 30/08 it has given me some ideads to check ie cpu
seating,earthing of m/b etc.
If anyone has had similar probs please advise.

Thanks in advance

I built recently with this board and a XP1700+. It booted perfectly the
first time and has been a really great board. I would pare it down as
much as possible, even to the extent of removing the ide cables from the
board to the hd and cdrom, even the floppy drive. Pull out any modem or
any card beside the video card. Change the jumper temporarily to clear
the bios (power unplugged of course.) You should be able to get the
monitor to display and get into the bios settings even with no boot
device (floppy, hd, cd) connected. Did you reseat the video card? They
can be difficult to properly seat in the AGP slot. I assume you are
using a video card designed for this older AGP slot. Make certain that
the board is not shorting out to the case. You can even try to run it
outside the case just on an insulating surface. It is possible you have
a defective board, but before RMA'ing it, I would try the above some
what radical steps to find the problem. It is also quite possible that
your power supply is the cause of the problem in both this and the Abit
board.

Thanks for suggestions
I`ve tried it out of the box with just graphics card etc, I read on web
today that if the keyboard or floppy drive are not drawing power it will not
post.As I`m using an old k/b I`ll try that next.At the moment I`ve taken the
heatsink off to double check so I`ve to to clean etc.

TIA

I`ve put it back together again, this time a plugged a fan into one of
connectors on m/b that had NB beside it.I got the bootup screen with a
checksum error- something like bus speed 133. I restarted but did not get
that far again. It switches it self off after about 5 to 8 seconds no beep
codes. I`m going to try another stick of memory first and then I`ll try re
fitting the cpu + heat sink,I used a stick on one which didn`t seem that
thick.
Any other suggestions ?

TIA

Your plan to try different memory given the error you described sounds
reasonable. If you can get to the bios screen, what temp is it showing
for the cpu? It should be under 50 C. You might want to clear the bios
again. Be sure to unplug the unit from the wall and leave the jumper
set to clear the bios for 30 seconds or so. The only fan if the
motherboard is not seeing it that causes an immediate shutdown is the
cpu 3-pin fan connector over on the edge of the board, near the cpu.
The other fan connectors aren't monitored for a shutdown. Remember,
these cpu's can become damaged in about 2 seconds without adequate heat
sink / fan cooling. Did you apply a very thin, even layer of thermal
paste between the heat sink and cpu? Could you have chipped the cpu or
cracked it in putting on the heat sink? Could your screw drive have
slipped off the heat sink and scored some tracings on the motherboard
when putting on the heat sink? And it really could be the powersupply.
Keep us posted of your progress.

Hi Just an update and somethingto give you a laugh.
well I used a thermal pad as you know.I bought some Artic silver 3 thermal
compound. When I removed the heatsink I noticed that the thermal pad was
stuck to the cpu and there was a thin layer of plastic between the cpu and
h/s.Well didn`t I feel stupid.I removed all that shit and applied the
thermal compound as instructed.Powered up, both power and hdd light
flicker.the h/s fan doesn`t even come on .I assume I have to redo the
compound again till I get it right.
PS the cpu appears not to have been damaged from heat pad etc.

new ak32E - I just finished a very smooth upgrade from a Soyo K7VTA Pro to a Shuttle AK32 E running a 1700+ Tbred. It is a faster board than the K7VTA Pro using a benchmark and does not have the trouble booting I often had with the Soyo when I moved to 133 fsb..
