| I recently bought 2 AN35N Ultra boards. When they post and I attempt to
enter the bios setup by pressing the delete key, nothing happens for 20-30
seconds and then it enters the bios setup. Also, it has the same delay when
it attempts to identify the ide drives. It also erratically id's the
processor and memory, some times it is correct and other times not. Is
anyone else experiencing these problems?

If overclocked back off settings to default. (1700 T'bred A if I remember
correctly See if problem remains on restart Also how many HD's etc.
are you running? Power supply might be insufficient or even failing.
Just got XP2500 Barton (unlocked) and was just checking the NG before I shut
down to perform "brain surgery" on my AN35N. Just got XP2600 333 T'bred
also, will soon have spare XP2100 and XP1700.

I have an Intel board that I recently built, it too took a long time to post
and enter BIOS setup. My problem was my WD hard drive was set to master
instead of single. When I installed a CD Rom and made it slave, things
really went fast. Western Digital drives are funny about that.

I want to upgrade my system with my tax refund, and have decided on
the Shuttle AN35N Ultra board. Both the Athlon XP 3000+ and 3200+ are
about the same price on Newegg. Any advice on which chip to get?
I would opt for a 2500+ and use the bucks for 1 Gig RAM, but you can't
be assured whether you will get the unlocked version in order to
overclock. Besides, I don't understand what I've read on the 'net
about how to overclock. The FSB speed confuses me. Especially when
they talk about the FSB and RAM needs to run at the same speed, and
the 2500+ is rated, what, 333? And DDR3200 is 400...
Any advice on the cheapest way to upgrade to a faster system using
this MB would be appreciated.
Right now I have an Athlon 1800+ on 266 FSB, not overclocked.
I'm bugeting about $300-400 for new MB, CPU and RAM, but don't want to
waste the $$$ if a cheaper CPU will do the trick.
Thanks!

Get a Barton 2500 and set the FSB to 200, get PC3500 and set to 100%. That
means the memory will run at the same speed as the CPU. These values can be
set in the BIOS. No messing around with jumpers like the "good old days".
Most Bartons can run at 200 if memory is up to the job.
Or hold off on the Barton and use your XP1800 if it's a T'bred B core. It
may be unlocked. Get good PC 3500 and the AN35N. You can always get the
Barton later. Before I got my Barton I had a 1700 that ran at 205x10.5 and a
2100 that did 210x10.5. Both with PC3200 and a slight bost in CPU voltage to
1.7v
Don't go cheap with a "no name" power supply. I use Antec, but there are
other good brands. I'm sure you'll get a few more suggestions

Frank,
Thanks a million for the advice. I did some more research on what you
suggested and decided to follow your advice.
A question or two, though:
On the RAM - All I could find on Newegg was Kingston and Mushkin
PC3500. Any comment on which is the better choice? And what is Level I
and Level II?
I've settled on the AN35N Ultra and the Barton 2500+, but need to
finalize which RAM to get.
Thanks again for your help!

Running AN35N Ultra, XP2600 Barton (locked) fsb=200 so it runs at 2.30 ghz.
This Barton will not go above 403. In this system, the memory only runs at
200 (400), but I did get pc3500 memory from Komusa - $69 for "overclocked".
It does run at 433, but I run in sync. I have a Zalman 7000A-Cu hsf which
I like very much (bestbyte.net). Make sure the case you get leaves 3/4
inch betseen the mobo and the PS. Some cases don't.
As Frank says, the PS is important. Get a good one. I happen to have a
KingWin 350W which has worked well.
Ventilation is important. I cut a hole for an 80mm exhause fan on top,
and a 120mm intake (filtered) on the side. I cut out the rear case
grillwork. My PS has two fans - one intakes the air right above the cpu.
I glued (GOOP) a little fan on the northbridge.

Hey KRISTI...
How did you cut your hole to mod the case for your fan?
I always ask, because I don't like using sheet metal snips, or sabre
saw with a hacksaw blade, etc.
My father was an amateur radio builder (shortwave) and in those days
(long time ago) you had to cut your own holes to mount gauges and
dials in blank chassis. He used something and cut perfect, beautiful
holes with no jaged edges and I'm trying like crazy to remember what
he used and I can't exactly remember, only a hazy memory. I was very
young then. >> Stay informed about: AN35N Ultra |

I just use a a hole saw (like the ones used for doorknob installs, etc).
Works great and cuts a beautiful hole. >> Stay informed about: AN35N Ultra |

Hi!
W1FS here!
but in the old days, he likely used a half inch drill and a hole cutter.
They are still available at Sears - a center drill and an adjustable arbor
with a cutter. Very hard to handle as it's finishing the cut!
But I used a drill to start the hole and a saber saw to do the round.
and then drilled out the 4 corner holes. It is easy to rough it out. If
you take a few minutes longer you can probably do a really nice job and
cover any booboos with a suitable grill.. You will always need to file the
finished product a tad.
hth!

Both very good choices! NewEgg good choice also! Level II Mushkin "better"
than level I Check the spec sheet. Not to confuse the issue but, GeIL,
Corsair, Crucial and Buffalo have recieved good reviews. I'm using Kingston
HyperX PC3500 because I was able to get a matched set (2x512) for $181 plus
$7.50 shipping. I would have pounced on Mushkin PC3500 Level II just as fast
for same price.

A Dremel Tool or equivalent would smooth out the rough edges prety fast
(with the right tip). Has anyone used those "case nibblers" I see at
CompUSA? Just drill a 3/8" hole and nibble away I'd like to duct
outside air directly to my Vantec Aeroflow and the Antec side panel has the
fan mounted too low. The air blows in under the AGP card which blocks any
kind of efficient flow to the HSF.
