Post subject: AN7 problems
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>abit (more info?)

I`ve just gone and nuilt myself a 3200Ghz AMD XP, 1 gb of DDR400, 160gb Sata
Hdd,AN7 mainboard,WinFast A380 Ultra 256Mb...

I installed the sata drivers, and the mother board drivers etc that the
manual says to od.. most of the bios settings are set as defualt, apart from
Video chacheing, Shadow chacheing which are set to disable... ive installed
various 3d drivers but i still get a problem playing racing sims.. you get
about 30seconds into a lap and the computer either C.T.D or resets.. or i
get a blue screen ( XP-pro ) saying windows cannot continue etc....?

I had a KT7 that used to do it, and i solved it with changing the Via
drivers... sadly the AN7 dosnt have them.. ive updated theNForce2 drivers...
and im now at the point of saying forget it, buy a different mainboard..

Anyone have any pointers to this problem or ideas etc..?

Thanks

What video driver did you load after loading nforce driver? Try relaxing
memory timings. How are your cpu and case temps?

I have no problems with my AN7 at all, it overclocks well and is stable as
arock.
Well we will need to know more of your specs like what Power supply (Rated
power) your system has and what brand of ram.
If the power supply is of a poor quality it could make this happen, also
looks a little like ram problems at first due to past experience.
If you have ever been in your computers bios you will see Ram timings and
voltages, Have a readup so you know what you are doing, But please let us
know more of your specs so people can give advice.

You won't get it beyond 225 FSB.
What sort of an "overclocking" board is that ?
Any board worth its salt should go to 250-270 FSB.

Well i went into my bios and heres what it said...

CPU operating speed 3200+
x-external clock 200Mhz
x-mulitplier factor x11.0
AGP Frequency 66MHz
CPU FSB/DRAM ratio auto ( i`ve tried 6/6 and it made no difference )
CPU Interface Disabled

CPU core voltage 1.656v
DDR SDRAM 2.65v
NB Core Voltage 1.60v
AGP Voltage 1.55v

Memory timmings = Optimal
Row-active delay =5
RAS-to-Cas delay=2
ROW-precharge delay=2
CAS Latency =2.5

Hope this helps

It should be as setting in the "Advanced Chipset Features" section of the
bios, when in there it might say the timing is done by SPD, If so change
the timings to something like 7,3,3,3 or 8,4,4,3 just to give a general
idea.
My system timings are 7,3,3,2.5 but im not running at 200fsb and when i try
It crashes after a while. I have faster ram (pc4000) coming so i know my
ram will function at 200fsb (400mhz). Not all pc3200 will do 200fsb with
tight ram timings so sometime you have to relax the timings. Higher number
= more relaxed timings.

Try setting your memory timing to 'BY SPD'...this will read the rated
timings from the module and set everything up accordingly.
The other thing to check is your CPU temperature. What idle and full load
temps are you seeing? Anything more than 55-60C under full load is a
problem. I'd also recommend downloading Prime95 and running the torture
test...This will stress your system and help you narrow down the
problem...You can use Prime 95 to generate a full load temperature too.

I've owned an AN7 and while I was a bit disappointed with it's overclocking
abilities it was 100% stable when run at default or near default
settings...So I'd not write it off yet.

Change the timings to this and see if it helps

board dosnt have via chipsets.. so i stuck<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

This link
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_TwinMOS_147.html

describes the memory you have and specifically says "not recommended for
nForce 2 chipset", so there you go. Any chance you can return this memory
for something more nForce 2 compatible? It looks like this kit runs about
$180 - $200. I'd say you could probably get some decent OCZ or Corsair for
that dough. Have you tried running it as single channel istead of dual
channel. No promises, of course. You likely wouldn't notice any performance
hit. If it works, great. Otherwise, swap it out.

Good Luck

If your 50C temp is recorded with the system idle then it's too hot. Try
running Prime95 as I said earlier and see what the temp climbs too.
