Post subject: AOL-broadband (cable) with a router
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>networking, others (more info?)

If I use an AOL-compatible router, such as Linksys, do I still have to
run that AOL client on my computer(s)?

Specifically, I'm interested in running Linux on my laptop (no working
AOL client there) and connecting through a wireless router.

Only if you want to connect through your ISP to AOL.
No use AOL = no need for AOL client on that system.

As long as you don't want to log into an AOL account with *that* system...

Too many double negatives for me. Are you trying to say "yes" here?

In comp.os.linux.misc, someone told me, if I use a router, AOL does
not even need that I'm running Linux. So I thought that implied that
it's possible to connect to AOL without running its client program.

As far as I know, if you want to connect to AOL, you use their gui. It's not a
question of what the AOL host can "see" behind the router, it's just the way
they designed the AOL "experience"...
