Post subject: ASUS CUBX HD size limit?
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>asus (more info?)

Hello, I have been using an old computer since 2000 to do audio
recording and have had little or no problems with it. However, I
recently picked up a 320 GB drive and it is not being properly
recognized by the BIOS or windows 98 se. Here are more specific
details on my system:

ASUS CUBX (i440 BX chipset)
PIII 700 (FSB 100MHz, I'm not overclocking because I don't need to)
Windows 98 SE

I have a system hard drive which is a 10GB Seagate and have never had
problems with it.

I had 2 dedicated audio drives, a 30GB drive, and a 60GB Western
Digital (WD600BB-00CFC0). Both of these drives run on the ATA Ultra
DMA 100 IDE chain.

I am replacing the 30GB audio drive with a Western Digital 320GB drive
(WD3200JB-00KFA0)

One thing that seemed odd is that the new drive is not recognized
unless it is set to be a SLAVE, although the drive I am replacing was
set to MASTER. But once I got it into the right MASTER/SLAVE with the
60GB drive, the first boot screen does recognize the drive right away,
showing it's full model number.

However, once I get into Windows, I don't see any indication that it
recognizes the drive at all.

After a few more reboots, I looked at some more of the details in the
BIOS to see what was up. I noticed that there is an inconsistency
between the two audio drives. The 60GB drive shows the CHS at 8.4 GB,
and LBA of 60GB. The 320 shows both CHS and LBA at 8.4GB.

The exact LBA numbers on the drives are:
For the 60GB - LBA 117231408
For the 320GB - LBA 625142448

So here are my questions:

1) Is there a limitation on HD size with the CUBX motherboard?

2) Might I need a BIOS update for the CUBX? I don't know exactly what
version is running, but I believe the date on it was March 15, 2000
(and there have been a few updates released since then).

3) Could my drive be defective?

4) Shouldn't I at least be able to see the drive with a lower capacity
in Windows98se?

I know this is an old computer, but hopefully there are still some
people who can help me out.

-Geoff

Win98 can ONLY recognize up to 137 GB harddrives. Your BIOS can only
recognize up to 137 GB or less.

Yup - and pretty much every motherboard of that or earlier vintage.

Yes, indeed you'd need a bios update to get the full size of the drive to be
available. Unfortunately, there ain't gonna be one.

>3) Could my drive be defective?

Well...Sure.

Probably - once you actually fdisk the drive, set up partition(s), format,
etc...

Seagate has a small document about the "137GB Problem"
http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/tp/137gb.pdf

And a card like this can help. The card can support >137GB when the
motherboard interfaces cannot. The card has its own BIOS chip, and
the BIOS is loaded by the motherboard BIOS, in order that the motherboard
BIOS can use its INT 0x13 capability for booting. Cards like this
are not foolproof, but considering what is happening to IDE interfaces
on motherboards these days, the card may still come in handy in some
future upgrade, where you need the ability to access some IDE
devices. I have a couple of these cards in my collection. One
of them boots my old computer. You need a driver to use it.

I'm running a couple of 250gig HDs on a P2B with a promise ata100
controller card in a pci slot. I forget what win98 handles as I
upgraded to windows 2000 service pk 4 and it runs fine.

You can dual boot an older drive with win98 on it by using the boot
from ide/ boot from scsi (promise card) setting in the bios.
