Buying both, or returning one for the other (especially A70 --> 3100)
seems unlikely. So why bother with the 3100 if you can get your hands
on the A70? Or the other way 'round?
With the A70 having a somewhat softer image (and then the 3100 a
"sharper image") and thus leaving more to do (if desired) in the
digital darkroom, It's really about what you want; both can take good
quality pictures.
The 3100 has more in-camera editing/adjusting modes, with the A70 you
have to decide (size/compression/(low) sharpening/b&w/sepia/whatever)
beforehand, or use an image editing software before printing.
The Manual mode of the A60/A70 is nice, but you might not really need
it? I mostly use the P-mode, i.e. programmed auto-exposure, and the
shutter priority-mode, TV.
The A70 has no "Best Shot"-feature and no sharpening control (besides
Low Sharpening in the Effect-functions). The low (and noise-free)
ISO-value of 50 is a big plus for the A70, whereas the ISO won't be
locked with the 3100 - making low-light picture less inviting.
My A60 has served me well so far - no hickups besides sometimes
focusing on the background and not the foreground in some cases
involing flowers - Therefore I bracket!
I did concider the 3100 before getting my first digicam, but I can't
say I regret not going with it; I only regret not going with the A70!
(Apart from the extra megapixel, the 320x240 video-mode is very nice,
but 640x480 is possibly nicer...)
