Hi, Bill. I'm sorry that the router is giving you such a hard time.
I assure you that you can set it up using a wireless connection, with
no need for a wired Ethernet connection. I did exactly that recently
with the MR814, MA401, and MA101.
I think that you've found the problem: a peer-to-peer (Ad-Hoc)
configuration is right for your old setup, but not for your new setup.
A network with a wireless router uses an access point (Infrastructure)
configuration, so you need to change that setting on the wireless
network adapters. Here are some other things to check:
1. Set the SSID to "Wireless" to match the router.
2. Disable WEP encryption, and don't enable it until everything is
working.
3. Configure the TCP/IP settings to obtain an IP address
automatically.
I can't find anything in the Netgear documentation that says that you
have to use wired Ethernet to set up the router. If you can, please
quote it in its entirety.
I'm looking at the Installation Guide on this web page:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/netgear1/MR814_QCard.pdf" target="_blank">ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/netgear1/MR814_QCard.pdf</a>
On page 8, which is in section 1 (Prepare to Install the Router), it
says:
Skip this step if you're using a wireless computer. Use the
Ethernet patch cable to connect the computer to one of the four
numbered Ethernet ports on the router."
The router's Reference Manual is available here:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/netgear1/MR814_RefGuide.pdf" target="_blank">ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/netgear1/MR814_RefGuide.pdf</a>
On page 2-2, is says:
To install and run the Model MR814 router over your network, each
computer must have the following:
o An installed 802.11b-compliant wireless adapter
OR
o An Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC).
