Mobo: GA-8KNXP non-Ultra v1

Last week I posted here asking about the best method for replacing my Maxtor
PATA C: drive with a SATA by cloning from Norton Ghost 2003.

I downloaded the ICH5R driver v3.5.2.2654 from the Gigabyte site and ran it,
getting the following error message:

Incompatible hardware. This software is not supported on this chipset.
Please select 'Yes' to view the Readme file for a list of supported
products. Refer to Section 21 titled 'System Requirements.'

Checking System Requirements, it states that I must have a P4 processor and
an "Intel 82801ER I/O controller." I've enabled the "On-chip SATA" in the
bios (f9) and the RAID selection is enabled below it, but XP-Pro didn't pick
up any new hardware or ask for any drivers after enabling these options.

What am I missing here? Is the "On-chip SATA" the same as the "Intel
82801ER I/O controller"? The SATA drive is expected on Monday or Tuesday
and I'd like to have everything ready to install before that time.

Hello Bob

I use a 8KNXP Rev 2 with 2 x Seagate 120 GB SATA as RAID 1 array on the
ICH5R controller. I also have a WD 200 GB PATA drive connected to the ITE
RAID connector which works fine in standalone mode. I do not as yet use the
Silicone Image SATA controller. My IDE 1/2 and 3/4 have CD-RW, LS-120,
DVD-ROM & ZIP 250 GB drives fitted. Basically if I read your post correctly
you are trying to enable the Intel RAID BIOS and drivers etc without any
drives fitted. This may be your problem as without a drive attached I do not
think anything will load. However look in the Device Manager and if the
Intel 82801ER SATA RAID controller is present but may have a yellow
exclamation mark then all is well. This means the driver is installed and
present in XP but as no drive is attached then XP simply has not loaded the
driver.

With regards to cloning your existing PATA drive to the SATA one on the
Intel controller Ghost 2003 will not recognise your SATA RAID. However it
may pick up a single SATA drive as the BIOS may remap this as an IDE device
as opposed to native SATA. I personally have done this unfortunately many
times but use Drive Image version 7 which picks up all these devices as it
uses the Windows XP drivers and allows you to load any necessary RAID/SCSI
controllers etc from the recovery console using the F6 option aka Windows XP
install. The really neat thing with Drive Image 7 is you can use it within
Windows as a background task.

The most important thing is to make sure that once you have cloned the drive
to remove the OLD drive otherwise XP may not allocate partition C: to the
new drive and you may have issues booting. If you want to clone your drives
in DI 7 make sure to use the Recovery Console via the bootable CD. If you
have any problems once you have cloned your drive you may need to run a
REPAIR of your XP installation and load the Intel drivers via the F6 option
(make sure you have a floppy with the drivers on it). The MB BIOS is also a
little confusing depending on which version you are using so make sure you
have set all the boot orders, enabled the appropriate controllers etc. When
you do a full REPAIR of XP it is NOT the recovery console but simply click
through to install a new version until XP says it is searching for an
existing installation. Make sure you can see your SATA install otherwise do
not continue otherwise you will have a new XP install but hose all your old
settings and programs etc. If you cannot see the C:\Windows installation on
your SATA drive then the BIOS is not set correctly and/or you have not
installed the SATA drivers via the F6 option correctly.

Hope that helps
Mark

First, I need to clarify that I will not be running a RAID array, but want
to simply clone my PATA drive to the new SATA and use it as the boot drive.
I was told in an earlier query that

There is nothing in Device Manager that suggests this controller is active,
either by a listing or a yellow exclamation mark. Again, the "On-chip SATA"
is enabled in the bios, as is SATA RAID, but the OS doesn't see it.

I understand that Ghost 2003 with latest updates will work with single SATA
drives, but I haven't experienced this personally.

Yes, I plan on removing the old drive after the cloning. Here was my plan
until I ran into this driver snag:

1. Install SATA drivers for XP.

2. Connect SATA drive and boot into XP-Pro as usual with the old drive.
Let XP pick up the new drive, then partition and format it.

3. Power down the system and run Ghost from a floppy to clone the old drive
to the new.

4. Set the SATA as the new boot drive and reboot into XP.

 > When you do a full REPAIR of XP....

If I need to do a repair install of XP I will probably return the SATA drive
and stay with the old setup.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Bob, you need to enable the On Chip SATA and set it to RAID.

Sounds like it is being picky and you need to install the drivers After you
have enabled the On Chip SATA (not the onboard - that is the Silicon Image
one).

With the intel chip, it reports itself as 82801EB if the Intel ICH5R SATA is
not enabled or not in RAID mode.

To clarify, here's the procedure I've taken so far, in sequence:

1. Enabled "On-chip SATA" and "SATA RAID" in bios (f9). XP Pro has not
recognized this action, and nothing in Device Manager has changed (that I
can see).

2. Tried to install what I thought was the proper SATA driver, from the
Gigabyte site under RAID Driver > Intel ICH5R, but received the error
mentioned earlier that I had "Incompatible hardware."
I tried v3.5.2.2654 (XP and 2K) and then v3.5 (XP only) with the same
result.

3. Checked original install disk for mobo and can find no mention of an
on-chip SATA driver.

Is it possible that if I attach the drive and boot into XP it'll then see
the controller and drive, and not until then? Is it possible the SATA
driver was installed with the chipset driver?

 > With the intel chip, it reports itself as 82801EB if the Intel ICH5R SATA

Isn't the ICH5R SATA controller supposed to be seen in the "SCSI and RAID
Controller" section of Device Manager? All I see there is my Adaptec SCSI
adapter, and under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" I see the same items there
were before, as follows:

Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA STorage Controllers
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel

Again, maybe this'll all clear up after the drive is attached and I boot
into XP for the first time. Making a change of this kind should *not* be
difficult!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Bob,

I would lay bets that if it is seeing this "Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA STorage
Controllers"
then the EB indicates NON RAID setting IE SATA is not enabled On Chip and
RAID is not enabled.

At the start this thread you mentioned the Silicon Image controller again. I
suspect you have enabled that and set it to RAID...

But its a little hard to see over your shoulder from this distance...

Regardless of RAID setting or not, if the Intel OnChip SATA is enabled, you
should see something... perhaps its being ultra smart if there is no disc
drive attached...

RE: ICH5R driver set-up

Bob [Tim, et al]
My experience with this thus far is that the ICH5R driver must be
loaded using the Intel F6 method during initial set up of a new hard
drive. [Download the Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition User's
Manual from Intel website for the F6 installation method]
My situation: I have a single SATA drive in the SATA0_SB connector. I
made the mistake of following Gigabyte's advice and mapped this to IDE
1. When I tried to load the ICH5R driver I got the error message
"Incompatible hardware. This software is not supported...". My current
set up works but I negate the benefits of the ICH5R connection.

So Bob, even though you will not be using RAID, I would suggest you
follow Tim's advice and use the procedure for setting up a RAID array.
That way you will have the drivers loaded and gain the benefits of SATA
on the ICH5R.
BTW "Lone Wolf" reported a 50% gain in ZD Winbench 99 high-end business
performance test after changing from a SATA mapped to IDE 1 to a
correctly installed SATA drive.

Keep in mind that this was the configuration before enabling the On-chip
SATA controller in the bios, and to my knowledge nothing changed. A friend
has an Asus P4C800 mobo with the 875p chipset and this combo that I'm
attempting to install (SATA boot with IDE's attached), and under Device
Manager he has *two* iterations of the 82801EB controller and the other
entries present. IOW, what I have plus a duplicate in that section. But
should the ICH5R SATA be in the IDE-controller section? Maybe his is
mapping to IDE, as I think he is only using one IDE controller (i.e., one
connector).

No, it isn't now and never has been enabled here.

Is there any way we could communicate via email? You can email me by nixing
the appropriate letters from the posted address. I could then send you some
screen shots.

That's what I'm thinking, that it won't do anything until a drive is
attached. But my friend's system doesn't show anything except what I
mentioned. There is no SCSI entry, but everything I have in the "Intel
82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers" section of Device Manager is
duplicated.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I'm reporting back that the problem stated above is solved. For the benefit
of anyone else trying to upgrade from PATA to SATA when the ICH5R controller
has not been enabled and installed in Windows XP, here's the procedure:

Assumptions: 8KNXP non-Ultra v1 with f9 bios

1. In bios, set "On-chip SATA" option to "Manual" (SATA0 to Port 0) and
"SATA RAID" to enabled.

2. Reboot into XP, which should then pick up the new hardware (SATA
controller) and ask for drivers.
A drive does not need to be attached for XP to see the controller.

3. Have drivers ready on a floppy or elsewhere. I downloaded "Intel ICH5R
Diskfile for OS installation" file under the RAID Driver section. Since
this is apparently not the latest driver, it is used only to install the
hardware for the first time.

4. Download the "Intel ICH5R" file v3.5.2.2654 (same section on site),
which is an self-extracting ZIP file. Run the EXE embedded therein, which
will update the drivers.

For XP to see the hardware, the key is to follow step 1. If On-chip SATA is
set to Auto it XP won't see the new hardware. If a drive is connected it
*might* pick it up, but in my case the drive wasn't available at the time.

Anyway, the drive is now running with no issues. Thanks to all for the
assistance you gave me.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Yes, that was the issue until yesterday, and the problem was corrected and
described in an earlier message on this thread. I had no drive until
yesterday afternoon, and when "On-chip SATA" was set to "Auto" the
controller wasn't being seen by XP. The fix was to set it to "Manual," at
which time XP saw the hardware and installed it using drivers from the GB
site. In Device Manager the 82801ER controller was seen normally with no
yellow "!". The drive was later cloned and it booted without issue.

I am using a single drive, and NG2003 saw it and the cloning to the SATA
drive worked fine. I've since cloned from the SATA to some other PATA
drives I use only for cloning, encased in mobil racks.

That may have been what was happening since I had two IDE channels open, but
setting to "Manual" and SATA 0 to port 0 solved the problem.

I never allow a clone to be present when booting into XP. Win98SE could
handle this combo, but I've heard 2K and XP can get confused and possibly
write/read to/from the clone, which may work until the clone is removed.

I never had to use the WinXP Pro install CD, nor the f6 option. Ghost did
the job in a much more forthright way, although I felt assured that if Ghost
had failed I could install XP, then restore from a Windows Backup to restore
the new C: drive to the last funtional state.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
