Hi,

Is anyone else having problems getting a good application of AS5 on their
Athlon? Whenever I
try, I cannot get a good enough interface between HSF and CPU core to get a
stable machine. Reverting back to AS*3* always (*always*) remedies the
matter. I find
the thickness of AS5 very hard to work with compared with the comparatively
thin AS3.

Any tips?

TIA...

A

use a plastic card of some sort... put a small blob of AS5 in the middle
and work outwards.. put less than you need and you can put more later if
you need it<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I did what they suggested on the webpage and didnt have any trouble..
Did you clean the HS and CPU really good before using AS5 as i hear it can
clump really bad. I clean'd mine with Smirnoff (triple dis vodkka)..

The AS5 page also says that it takes a few days for everything to settle in<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Yes, everything cleaned fine. As I say, I have no problems with AS3,
Ceramique, generic goop or anything else I've ever used - just AS5. Clearly
my fault - I just don't quite understand it. Guess I'll have to get to the
bottom of it because there'll be no more AS3 soon!

Also, maybe the tube you got is extra old/dry.

It is quite thick and I did have some clumps at first, but as more came out,
it smoothed out.

Well since I can't see first hand how you do it, I'm not sure whatyou're
doing wrong. This is the procedure I use:

Put a small blob on the heatsink. With finger-in-plastic-baggie spread a
nice, even layer on the bottom of the heatsink. There should be enough AS
left on the baggie to cover the CPU core with a nice thin layer, so do that.
Then just put the heatsink on and you're done.

Just to note, don't be afraid to put on more AS. The recommended dose of
half-grain of rice is BS as far as I'm concerned. You need enough to work
with. If you put on too much, the force of the heatsink against the core
will push out the excess.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
