Hi.
I've got an Argus DC3185 3.2 MP digital still camera, which can also be
used a a webcam/PC cam. But when I try to do this, the images coming
out are very dark, unless I point the thing at a light of course. More
precisely, there's high constrast between reflective foreground objects
and the background (for example shiny plastic boxes and the wall behind
them with lots of light hitting them), with the objects visible but the
bg darker than heck. But when I take stills, the images are fine. What
the heck is wrong? Bad camera? If so, why OK on the stills? Lying
company? Something wrong with my software? Why is it so dark? |

Dark images are an indication of aperture being set wrong and not enough
light in the room.
When you take still images, the automatic exposure corrects the shutter
speed and aperture for the light conditions.
Check the default settings for shutter speed and aperture.
And see if the webcam software has adjustment for the room (light)
conditions.
I do not have experience with the Argus camera. But if the aperture is not
wide open, you would get dark video, if the light in the room is not very
bright.
Maybe try connecting a TV set to the Video output and see what kind of image
you get on the TV.

Still pics take time to process because the camera is assessing things
like focus, light levels and white balance after you press the button and
vefore it actually take the picture. As a web cam it's spitting out 10-20
frames per second and doesn't do much, if any of the pre-processing
because it doesn't have time.

bright
color with near real-time motion. So why don't you get that on the
computer?
