This could be it, as I am not using any controller but direct
to the MB IDE, the original Maxtor 20GB has never shown
the type name in W98SE only the BIOS and some test utilities.
Though even some of these mistake the 503+ for the 2013 MB,
(using a CMD649-IDE controller on this 2013) but this has always
shown HD information correctly, from the 6.4GB up to the 80GB.
I am unclear about what the VIA BM is. ah, found it and the lastest
but now oldish VIA 4in1 version 4.35 AND NOW 4in1443v.
The trouble started after getting into trouble with the Linux dual-boot
which was on the 20GB but the 2rnd 80GB HD had the W98SE setup
on it and booted OK until I swapped things around, but still did
on its own as master.
I am thinking of trying a MS format as after getting the 80GB
drive formated as a slave drive I am now getting a new problem
in that I am now getting the the MS wanting to rollback the 20GB
master drive.(not an fault/option I have had in the past)
Though this could be the many things, including the latest TNT2,
VIA4in1, etc drivers.
The original 80GB was formated & partitioned and a transfer of W98SE
using the Maxtor utilities, until I messed up the Linux (on the 20GB master)
but cleared with MS Fdisk/Format/reinstall, thank goodness.
The worst part is when disaster strikes it is WHAT caused it
as they do not always show up after the upgrade, even in the past
I had not installed all the VIA4in1 options, though did this time.
