The firmware update program is a DOS program; it can run from any device
that can be seen by DOS. This includes the root of drive C: if you can
boot from C: into a command prompt mode (not always possible if C: is an
NTFS device), as well as USB bootable devices and optical media (CD/DVD).
Most modern motherboards have the update function in the BIOS, you don't
need the BIOS update program, only the actual firmware file.
For the $5 that it will cost, keep a floppy and floppy cable around.
Also, if you work on PCs, get a USB floppy drive that is generally
recognized as a bootable device (most are these days).
