Hello everyone,
This is my first time building my own system from scratch. Here is
what I bought to build it:
VGA ASUS|V9480TVD 128MB TI4800SE8X 1 (OEM) $161.99
CPU P4/3.0CGHz 800M 478P/512K HT RTL 1 $269.00
MB 875P SY-P4I875P SOYO RTL 1 $185.00
SOUND BLASTER|AUDIGY 2 ZS PCI RTL 1 $83.00
DVD ASUS 16X DVD-E616P1 R 1 $33.99
POWER SUPPLY|ANTEC SL400 400W RTL 1 $60.00
MOBILERACK IDE KF-20 W1FAN RET 2 $19.98
DDRAM 512MB|64X72 PC3200 C3 CRUCL% 2 (OEM) $240.00
Total: $1052.96
Note: The memory seems to be "Crucial" brand, not just shipped from
Crucial, the company (if the labels are to be believed). I stopped
using the mobile racks on the advice of a local techie who had
concerns about my two 120 gig Maxtor 7200 RPM hard drives overheating.
And by the way, I researched all of these components and their specs
thoroughly before purchase (from newegg.com) to ensure their
compatability. Obviously that was not sufficient.
My one-sentence "sob story" is that I am on a fixed income (I'm on
disability) and it took me a very long time to save up this money. Now
I have a pile of "high-end components" as one tech called them, and no
matter what I do, I can't get the system to stop freezing - usually
within a few minutes after logon, but once it ran for 7+ hours before
locking up. Another time, 2+ hours. I admit that I am lost as to what
direction to take now. I have read a great number of posts to this
group and I am overwhelmed by all of the variables that seem to be
involved in getting this motherboard to work with other components, as
well as concerns with the quality of the boards in light of Soyo's
manufacturing practices, etc. What should I do next? Call or email
Soyo? Try suggestions that will hopefully be generated by this post?
Both? And perhaps I should have it checked out by the local repair
shop - I don't know! All I do know is that I am 100% determined to
make this system work, no matter what I have to return, repair,
replace, rearrange, install, uninstall, etc. I've waited too many
years and spent too much money now to let this system sit useless
somewhere in my closet.
Any suggestions would be (quite obviously) most welcome!

P.S. I apologize if this post was a bit long. I do go on at times.
Also, I realize that it has been short on details as to what I've done
so far to remedy the situation. I will, of course, provide any details
requested in replies to follow. >> Stay informed about: First Build Nightmare with Soyo Dragon II Platinum Edition.. |

Hang on, it's darkest just before the dawn! It sounds like you are
booting into your operating system okay, so that's a big plus. If
your system sometimes runs several hours before freezing, that's
actually another plus.
The most common causes of random freezes in my experience are:
> overheating. Go into your BIOS and there should be a "PC Health" or similar header. In there will be the temperature readout of your CPU. It shouldn't be above 65C and that is extreme end. My unit is set to shut down at 70, but I am running AMD chip.
> bad memory. This is also very common cause of random freezes. I see
that you have two sticks, so pull one and run your unit for a few
days. If you still have freezes, change it out for the other one. If
your freezes stop, you found your problem. Also try changing slots
with the single stick. I have had the experience of a stick of RAM not
working in center slot, works fine in the end slot. Why? Who knows!
There is also a free program you can download and it tests your
memory-memtest. But change-out is the quickest and easiest. Also pay
attention to what you are running at the time of freeze. If it is a
high-demand program like computer games that triggers the freeze, it's
almost certain memory probs. If you can run low-demand proggies like
Word or Exel for days with no problems, ditto. OR does it only freeze
when you are on the internet, otherwise okay? Another clue there.
>Video Card: check that you have the latest drivers, and you are
running DirectX9 from Microsoft. Sometimes certain video cards will
conflict, so check to see if there are complainst of your make video
card causing freezes. Forums like this one are an excellent source.
Well, this will get you started. I am sure others here have good
suggestions.
Don't worry, you will find the problem and learn a lot in the
meantime. From what you describe, you have a pretty good system that
runs well, we just have to find the bad guy causing the problem.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: First Build Nightmare with Soyo Dragon II Platinum Edition.. |

Try this:
Go into bios and where it has settings for your cpu, there should be a
"/#" called the "divider." I believe it sets ratio speeds for the clock
multiplier. Change it to "/5."
Also, make sure your ram is compatible. There have been many problems
with ram and Soyo boards. You might want to read these newsgroups or go to
their site. Since I haven't had that problem myself, I can't remember what
people were doing to resolve it.
Lastly, try turning down the gpa multiplier to 4x or 2x. Mess with the
antisopic (sp.) settings in the video driver's properties area. There are
other settings there you can mess with too.
Oh ya, switch out parts with some known good parts until you isolate the
problem. Try your parts in a working PC. This last recommendation is alright
if you have plenty of time on your hands. Like someone said, at least it
boots and runs an OS. The problem you're describing isn't too uncommon and
sounds somewhat resolvable.
The previous post had some good recommendations.

Divider needs to be "4" NOT 5
133 x 4 = 533
multiplier of 23 to get 3ghz<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: First Build Nightmare with Soyo Dragon II Platinum Edition.. |

Well I had a similar problem (Or so I thought... Regardless... Keep reading)
I have to ask you several things:
1) Did you check the SOYO site for updates and revisions for:
A) The BIOS
B) Any and ALL DRIVERS for your MB
You CANNOT just use the CD for drivers because by the time you get
the MB the DRIVERS are usually outdated (if the product is new and such)
2) Did you read the MANUAL?
Okay, you said the system boots right: " I can't get the system to stop
freezing - usually
> within a few minutes after logon, but once it ran for 7+ hours before
> locking up. Another time, 2+ hours. I admit that I am lost as to what
> direction to take now. "
Well this sounds like a driver issue to me, and I'll tell you be, I had
a similar problem so you know what I did?
I had to go on the SOYO site go to downloads found my MB and clicked ALL
downloaded all the NEW drivers and what do you know??? VIA 4in1
DriverPackUpdate (or something like that) Para:Install this if your
system exibits instability and constant and reoccuring freezing...
Infact the MB Manual talks about this:::
" STABILITY ISSUE: MY SYSTEM INTERMITTENTLY LOCKS UP, VERY UNSTABLE
1) CHECK THE CPU TEMP IT MIGHT BE OVERHEATING CHANGE THE CPU FAN
2) DO NOT OVERCLOCK YOUR CPU
3) CHECK THE SPECIFICATION OF THE MEMORY MODULE MAYBE THE M/B DOES NOT
SUPPORT IT
4) GO TO BIOS SETUP AND LOAD FAILSAFE SETTINGS PLEASE CHECK IF THE
SYSTEM PERFORMANCE IN THE BIOS SETUP IS SET TO TURBO/MAXIMUM
5) CHECK WEBSITE FOR LATEST BIOS UPDATE
6) CHECK WEBSITE FOR FAQS REGARDING INSTABILITY ISSUE
7) CHANGE THE MEMORY MODULE OR CPU
THE POWERSUPPLY MIGHT NOT HAVE ENOUGH WATTAGE TO SUPPORT ALL THE
PERIPHERALS IF YOUR SYSTEM HAS OTHER PERIPHERALS CONNECTED LIKE CDRW
EXTRA HDD ETC DISCONNECT HEM
9) INSTALL VIA 4 IN 1 DRIVER
hope this helps

Woobie WAKE UP,
This board is an INTLE board there is no CPU Divider, there is the CPU
clock ratio but this is fixed and auto detected from the CPU installed
in the board. The only settings for the CPU is for Front Side Bus
Speed which on this board with his CPU should be set to 200 if he has
it set to Manual or if set to Auto it will detect it all by itself.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: First Build Nightmare with Soyo Dragon II Platinum Edition.. |

Sir,
Just to let you know, the SY-P4I875P is an excellent board. But you
need to give us more information so we can help you out. You listed
all the parts you bought but you left out some very important
information. Such as where the two Maxtor hard drives are connected.
Also which operating system your running on the board. On the memory
just which DIMM slots are the memory located and how you have the
memory timings set.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: First Build Nightmare with Soyo Dragon II Platinum Edition.. |

Snail,
Did you READ the Manual? This board is an INTEL board there are no VIA
4 in 1 drivers for it. Your suggestion on downloading the latest
drivers is good. But there are many things he needs to tell us if he
wants a real answer for his problems.
