IMO the P4 3.06GHz is a not the best choice for this system... The 800MHz
FSB P4's are better suited to this mobo/memory combination.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Do you want a critique, or are you just showing off that killer system? Smile

Hey, can you trade the 512 for 2 256 sticks of Mushkin? See, that way you
can put a stick in slot1 and one in slot3 and run dual channel. It's a
little bump in RAM throughput, but well worth it. I really like my P4C800E
Dlx. I think you will too. The WD SATA is sweet too. Love those skinny
cables!

Why do you need a CD-RW and a DVD? Why not just a CD/DVD-RW?

That's an XP box. Run Linux on a beater.

So you are suggesting that the 3.2ghz P4 would be a better bet... well it is
a bit beyond my 100$ +- range, but what the hell i just plunked 550 ona
monitor today..... why not do it right!!!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Even the 3 GHz P4 would work. It has the same HyperThreading that the 3.2
and 3.06 has, but it runs the FSB at 800MHz, instead of the 533 of the 3.06.
And it can use the dual channel DDR, as well. Up here in Canada, the 3 GHz
is about the same price as the 3.06 (+/- $20). The 3.2 is about $200 more
expensive than either one.

Dangit... you talked me into it... P4C800E delux it is.... add in another
ten bux.....

Actually intended to see if there were any major GOTCHA's in this setup...
had one reported and resolved involving a slight bottleneck with the 3.06
processor running at 533mhz FSB instead of 800... GREAT HELP AND ADVICE!

Intention is to have one badass box, and price is actually reasonable
compared to manufactured, AND i won't have to put up with all kinds of BS
slftware , i already own licenses to what i want to run, why pay for another
oem bundled copy?

Its so danged nice haveint two optical drives (espeically disk to disk
copy!) also lets me leave in a CD that i haven't found a good crack for, and
still have another drive open for whatever else, and the DVD reader is dirt
cheap.. will eventually add a third DVDRW... but im topped out on budget
now....

This will be an XPpro box... thinking the old laptop may loose its' XP
license and go to either linux or win2k... Like the idea for 2 sticks... so
i may add another 512 stick when i order the DVD in a couple-three
months.... i just can't stand to take a step backwards from what i have now
(and althogh 2x256 isn't really a step backwards... trying to step it back
forwards to 1gb will cost more later)...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

If it is at all comforting to know, I have a very similar setup to what you
are planning...

P4C800-E Dlx
P4 2.8C CPU
1GB HyperX PC3500 Dual channel kit (2x512MB)
ATI All In Wonder 9800 Pro
Antec TruPower TruBlue 480W PSU

and these parts complement each other wonderfully. Also, this motherboard
makes overclocking a painless/easy job, infact it almost begs you to crank
up the juice. With stock cooling and voltages I would be able to run my 2.8
comfortably at 3.1GHz and with the aftermarket cooling parts I've added I
can run over 3.3GHz without changing voltages. Your results of course may
(will) vary. I have been building my system as my budget allows and by
saving money on the 2.8GHz CPU I was able to splurge in other areas of the
build. Good luck and keep us updated!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

You've got that right!

I'm running my 2.8 @ 3.3 with stock CPU voltage, and just the smallest bump
in RAM voltage. Running my Samsung PC2700 at 2-2-2-5, waiting on a good deal
on some PC3XXX of some kind.

Why not the 3.0 Ghz 800FSB P4?

SYSTEM ORDERED! Changes made as follows... replace 3.06ghz p4 with
3.2ghz...replace p4c800 delux with p4c800e delux (wanted digital audio out).
Finaled on 1 stick of ram and 1 HD for now... will add one each + a dvdRW in
a few months (also picked up driveimage7 so that when i do get the raid
array setup i can restore the volume from CD instead of scratch install of
winxp... will deal with driver issues when i get there). IN theory it
should be shipped tomorrow, and arrive about the same time I arrive in
Dallas for 2.5 days of meetings.... so won't get to build til friday
eve/saturday morning at earliest.....

Please post your overclocking results. It could easily hit 4Ghz. Smile

Overclocking was only a minor decision factor in why i chose that particular
config, i don't plan on any OC out of the box, probably not until it starts
to lag behind the requirements for software, not real keen on voiding MB and
Processor warantee right off the bat... ask again in a couple more weeks...
should be obsolete by then....<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hey, if overclocking was a minor factor, then just do a minor overclock...
say 800mhz. Smile

I hit things just right. Paid through the nose for a 2.8Ghz/ 800Mhz HT and
Asus board back in the spring, but when it hit 3.2Ghz right out of the box,
it has been hotter than any stock combo until just recently. The 3.4's are
hotter now, but it was a good ride. Heck I may even open it up and see what
it will really do.

I can't wait for the 90nm stuff to come out.

Sure good deal! I have a P4 2.6C @3.25GHz, can't recommend to anyone to buy
a 3.2 when it is so easy to O'clock a 2.6C.

System: Abit IC7 mobo, Kingston HyperX PC3200 1GB (2x512), FSB 250 Memory
bus 200 agp/pci 66/33

Overclock ratio 5:4

Runs stable and cool.

Parts arrived as expected while i was out of town... got it up and running
with WinXP pro installed within 2 hours of opening the first box... not bad
for my first build in 10 years.... runs great... drive image is being a bit
of a PITA.... i got DrvImage 7.0 with the intention of doing incremental
BU's every day or two while im not home, and then when i do upgrade to a
raid array cpy the image to cd's and build the array from that. Problem is
that i get a "The service did not start due to a logon failure" went into
the v2i protector service and verified that yes I did give myself permission
to use the service, went into admin tools and checked that yes i really am
an administrator.. rebooted and still won't start.... any ideas on that? I
do have the system on a small network with an XPhome machine, but only
shared rescource is a printer and a shared directory on the xpHome box... no
shared rescources on new computer. Internet connection is through a
firewall/router and then to cablemodem. Any ideas??
