Post subject: CD Drive will not read
Archived from groups: alive>computers>hardware, others (more info?)

I can not read CD's on my computer. I have tried 3 different drives that I
know are good, since they work on another system I have.

I can put a hard drive on any of the IDE cables connections and they work
fine, but the CD Drives will not work. I have tried all combinations of
Master-Slave configurations, but no luck.

The system does find the Drive during booting and even shows it in MY
Computer. But when I try to open it in My Computer, I get the message that
the drive is unavailable.

This is a P3 computer running W98.

Is there something that a CD drive uses on the IDE cable or power supply
connection that is not used by a hard drive that could cause this problem.
Of course, I have gone into device manager and deleted the CD Drive and even
the IDE controllers and re-installed them, but it still doesn't work.

Any help would be appreciated.

There may be a hardware conflict with another peripheral device.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I have 2 drives, a cd Rom and a DVD R/ CD RW. The DVD one is the master
drive. Everytime I try to open files in the CD ROM, it says drive not
available. I have tried everything...even making it the master but it
gives the same response. The drive is by some Star Data and came with the
system when I bought it. I want to keep it since it is a 68X drive. Any
suggestions there?????????
