Post subject: CD-ROM Drive Not Recognized, yet BIOS recognizes it
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>abit (more info?)

I am building a computer with fresh hard drive. In my attempt to set
up the computer and hard drive, I need to load some things from the CD
ROM. My BIOS can detect and identify the CD-ROM, however, when
attempting to utilze bootable CD-ROM's, the data to begin the boot can
be accessed but then the rest of the data can not and the boot process
fails. I have not only tried this with a CD-ROM but also with two
different DVD-RW drives. I get the exact same response no matter
which drive I use. I have tried various settings, but most frequently
have tried setting the CD ROM to Master since the CD ROM is the only 1
IDE drive connected. I seem to be stuck since I can't continue the
configuration of my system without access to the CD-ROM. To clarify,
the CD-ROM is not acquiring a Drive letter. Attempts at setting up
ATAPI have so far failed.

Any suggestions?

How about listing your hardware, telling us what OS you're trying to
install, and breaking your posts up into a couple or three paragraphs to
make them a little easier to read?

You seem to have tried more than one optical drive, but have you tried more
than one CD? - Is the one you're currently using dirty or damaged?

You also say you're building a computer with a fresh hard disk. Does this
imply that immediately prior to installing this new HD, the system had an OS
up and running - and that the optical drive was properly recognised and
worked fine?
