Post subject: CD-RW Mysteries ?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>cd-rom (more info?)

I have XP Pro installed with a CD-ROM drive and a CD/DVD Burner drive.

I also have Nero CD Burner S/W v.5,5,8.0 and InCD S/W installed.

I usually ignore the InCD S/W due to ts user-unfriendly interface and
burn all data onto CD-R disks only.

However I've recently tried to use a CD-RW disk , initially by
recording data to it - ( successfully ) , then removing this data by
formatting the disk using the InCD software and then attempting to
re-record other data onto the same CD-RW disk.

When I do this latter operation I get a message which states :-

" InCD currently accesses one or more recorders. Please eject these
CD's and restart Nero afterwards "

I have two removeable drives - a CD-ROM drive and a CD-Burner drive.
When the above operation is in progress , I have the CD-RW disk in the
CD-Burner drive.

What is happening here ? Why can't I re-record data to this , now
blank CD-RW drive ?

In the pre-amble to these CD-RW drives it says that these may be used
like a floppy - record, delete and then re-record !!

Would it be that simple !!

Here's where you're running into trouble. Formatting a disc using a
packet writer like InCD or DirectCD isn't just erasing the disc.
You're erasing the disc, and putting a file system onto it. That
means that the disc that's been FORMATTED isn't blank because you've
put the InCD or DirectCD file system onto it. To burn it as an
eraseable CDR, the disc has to be blank, or at least it has to report
that it's blank. Use the Erase option inside Nero to return the disc
to a blank state.
