Post subject: new CD-R disks can't be formatted, or used???
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>cd-rom (more info?)

I have a Toshiba CD-ROM XM-6502B, it works with most software CD's that I have. But I am trying to use some new disks
to copy some files onto, and can't seem to access them using Nero. When I try , using Win2000 and My Computer, to
access these new disks I get a message that they(it) need to be formatted. I say yes, then I get the message that they
can't be formatted.

These new disks are CD-R, 80min 700mb, 1x-40x compatible, AT&T brand. I'm not sure what to do at this point or what it
means that they need to be formatted. Could someone help with this.

Thanks, jc

Just to clarify, when I tried accessing these new disks using My Computer, the message said "the disk in drive Z is not
formatted, do you want to format it now" . Then when I said yes, the message said "the disk in drive Z cannot be
formatted". It said this instantaneously, there was no disk spinning up first, I clicked Yes and this second message
came right up.

The drive is read-only; it doesn't have the ability to write to
anything.

Of course you're completely right...this was on an extra computer given to me and I didn't even think to check. I took
the disks to my main computer and the Plexwriter, and they worked like they were supposed to.

My final words...thanks for the help and duh!!!
