Post subject: CD drives show in DOS not Windows 98se
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>cd-rom (more info?)

I do apologise if this is totally not within the remit of this group but
I have this knock-on effect with my pc.

Both my hard drives and CD-R/W show up in the BIOS but for the first
time I have an error and now it won't go away.

Both hard drives (C: and DSmile show up in Windows but my CD drive doesn't
show up and I have a persistent error that shows up in my [Control
Panel] System Properties which is that both my Floppy disk controller
and Primary and Secondary IDE controllers have the yellow circled
exclamation mark '!' and removing the VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller
as suggested by the on-screen prompt does not correct the error as the
controller returns.

Windows can be installed easily using the generic CD driver that comes
with the setup but I think the VIA controller is corrupt somehow and
even making a ghost copy of the VIA chipset CD on the D: drive does not
correct the (no CD drive) problem.

Is a full-on format and spending a day re-installing every damn piece of
software on the cards ?

Sorry guys but I am hoping some canny person knows of a way around this
next step.

Many thanks,

Richard Brooks.
