I don't use this computer much, but when I last turned it on a month ago it
was fine. Turned it on yesterday and got a checksum cmos error on boot up.
It will boot, however, using the system defaults and everything seems to be
ok when WinXP loads. But when I try to make any changes in the bios setup,
the computer goes dead, except for power and fans, and the only way I get it
going again is by clearing the cmos with the jumper.

The only thing I can think of is that the processor speed is not correct,
but when I try to change it like I say, the computer goes dead. Even when I
go into setup and don't change anything, it goes dead and I need to clear
the
cmos.

Any ideas?

Hi Paul -

A CMOS Checksum Error is what you get when your system has lost it's CMOS
memory and is defaulted to run at Failsafe Defaults (100 MHz FSB).

1st suspicion: the motherboard battery (though that doesn't explain why it
crashes in the CMOS Setup screens). Meter it and replace if under 3 volts.

2nd suspicion: your PSU has gone south. Test with another PSU and see if
you can get to the CMOS Setup screens and Load Optimized Defaults, do your
other customizations and save and exit. Reboot and see if the Checksum
Error goes away.

And a 3rd suspicion:

Check the capacitors on your board.

If any are domed or are leaking reddish/brownish crud, you're a victim of
bad capacitors. This was a common problem among every manufacturers boards
for a period of time due to a bad electrolyte formulation being in
circulation.

If you're a victim of bad caps, you'll need to have them replaced on the
board. Abit had a class action lawsuit settlement on the bad caps issue,
but the settlement period has passed. I've heard they're still accepting
RMA's for the affected boards in the United States (it was a USA only
settlement) .. and may also be elsewhere in the world. You might check with
Abit's RMA department to see if you can get the board repaired under an
extended warranty.

Another option is a 3rd-party service, like our own member "Homie" .. see
his website at http://www.motherboardrepair.com.

Caps are ok. I did change the battery cause it was bad (didn't keep the time
when the comp was off) but problem remained. Power supply is a decent one
but not up to today's standards. Maybe that's it although there's been no
other symptoms that might indicate a ps going south. I've a spare but not at
this location so it'll have to wait to see. Thanks very much bird.
