Mine usually runs at about 56 degrees. Recently it was getting as high as
70 degrees, at which point I decided I had a problem. Cracked the case open
and found the CPU heatsink was COVERED in a dust blanket, so there was very
little airflow.

There doesn't seem to be much of a way around this problem with the heatsink
that came with the CPU, the fins are just too close. I don't know if other
heatsinks available have a better design to allow the user to go greater
than 3 months without cleaning the heatsink.

Make sure you use a good thermal grease spread very smoothly and do it
without touching the CPU or heatsink bottom with your fingers. I use a
post-it note, it works great. I always take the manufacturer installed
thermal sticky off and then replace it with Antec's thermal grease. Then I
clean both the seating surface and the CPU with alcohol. Works like a
champ.

Make sure your case has good ventilation too. If you don't, then the heat
from your CPU will build in your case and then your temperatures will go up
anyway.

And don't make my first mistake. I wasn't thinking to clearly when I first
got this CPU (it's my first XP CPU) and was running it at 2000 MHz instead
of 1666. It still ran stably though, just really hot (about 72 degrees with
minimal processing going on).

That sounds a little hot to me. I've just built a system for my parents
using a 2000+, I chucked on an Akasa 821 2q silent jobbie. It keeps idle
temps around 35 deg. The HS used to sit on top of my 2600+ but only kept it
at around 55 deg. idle. But it still never got over 63 deg. I put a 80mm
Akasa unit on and now get idles of 40 deg and never get over 50 under load.

It's also worth noteing that the 2000+ machine has no additional case fans.
I've got an intake and extraction fan on the case with the 2600+ and it
makes a lot of difference when the cpu is put under load for long periods.

Yeah, dust is a pretty good insulator. The temperature is consistent with
the documentation from AMD. I think they say it'll run properly up to 70 C,
but that's gotta reduce the lifespan of the CPU.

Also, my computer is always running Seti-at-home, which is an intensive
operation. Without that program running, it idles at about 52 C.

That's adequate ventilation, in my opinion. But I've seen a lot of people
build custom computers with the cheapest case they can find, and the only
fan it comes with sometimes is the fan for the power supply. That is NOT
adequate ventilation.

You've got to have at least the extra fan drawing the air directly away from
the CPU (this one is available in almost every ATX/mini-ATX case I have seen
with the exception of some OEM's). I like to have the additional fan
drawing cool air in from the front. And if you can, it's a good idea to
have a slightly positive pressure in the case, to prevent drawing dust into
your drives (CD-ROM, floppy).
