I have an older CRT Monitor 19" (about 6 years) made by Panasonic.
Last night, as always, I started the computer (everything was OK) but
later on when I came back to it, there was only a thin vertical white
line in the middle of the screen (black background). I could do
nothing to go back to the desktop screen so I simply rebooted the
computer. After numerous reboots, all I got was a pitch black screen.

I assumed that either my monitor was dead or perhaps my ATI video card.
I plugged an older 15" monitor to test and sure enough XP booted up
just fine so it is obviously the monitor. Any guess what the problem
might be (burnt lamp, etc.)? Is it likely expensive to fix (this would
be my guess).

Before writing off the thing and throwing in the garbage, I am just
trying to make sure it is not something easy and inexpensive to fix.
Personnally I think the stupid thing is toast but I figured I would
seek a few feedback from the experts around here.

Andre
PS: I already called Panasonic but they do not make monitors anymore
and therefore have no tech support for the product. So they were not
useful at all at guessing what might be wrong.

Sounds typical of losing horizontal deflection, which as you guessed is
not simple, nor inexpensive. A TV repair shop may be able to fix it,
assuming they can obtain the correct part(s) - and as P'sonic is out of the
business, that sounds a bit unlikely.

Thanks. Yes I pretty much decided to shop for a new one. I was just
making sure someone wouldn't tell me "you just need to replace a $2
fuse" or something like that. Oh well, good excuse to move on to the
LCD generation...
