Hi All,

This question is about a camcorder, not a camera, but I was not sure where
else to post.

I just purchased an Optura 20, and the salesman I was talking to was trying
to sell me a UV filter as well. I told him I was not interested, even
though he seemed to think it was extremely important. I figured I could
always buy one later, if it was necessary. So, my question is, is it
something that is necessary? He seemed to think that if I did not buy a UV
filter, I would damage my lens - can someone explain this to me? Or is he
just trying to sell me something?

Sincerely,
-Josh

I've no real experience with camcorders, but, you most certainly won't
damage your lens. With any camera a UV filter can sometimes be handy in
bright high altitudes and even low altitudes, but, not necessary.

Most photogs consider it a "safety shield" in case of bumping the front
element into/with something. You can replace a filter a whole lot cheaper
than the lens!

You don't need an expensive one ... ! That's usually a pricy 'extra' and
spiff for the salesman at POS.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

The UV-filter will, amongst other things, act as a protective layer
in front of the more expensive (to replace if damaged) lens.

But more glass in front of the lens equals higher possiblity for lens
flare and other "defects". Other filters, like Neutral Density and
polarizer could be more useful if the light is too bright.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
