I'm considering the Casio QV-R51. Mainly because it is 5Mp, compact, fast
and it takes standard AA batteries. Seems to get good reviews generally and
is reasonably priced (GBP 229 from pixmania.co.uk)

Any opinions on it or alternatives with the same qualities?

I have owned several digital cameras including two casio. First a qv
3500 3.2 meg pix which took great pictures but the camera was flimsy
and bulky. I was a little hesitant to purchase another casio. But to
my suprise Casio had corrected all of the problems. The QR-R51 is
constructed well (built to last). It is compact, has long battery
life and the pictures are wonderful. The review are all correct. When
you put it side by side to the canon s500 and consider the price, the
QVR-51 is a steal. $298.00 at circut city with free shipping.

Yikes!!!!!!!

Yes, but also consider that unlike the other Casios, this one has a no
name lens. So we don't really know the brand of the lens and it
probably could wear out soon or something. I have heard that it takes
great pictures, but I would regard it as an unbranded camera.

OTOH, I am not sure I would be too comfortable with a camera coming
from Casio anyway. So if you're ok with that, then its probably a good
choice.

I've owned Konica and Olympus cameras prior to my Casio 3000, and i must
say that I've been delighted with my Casio and wouldn't hesitate to buy
another. In fact I've given a 4000 as a gift. Last night I saw a Nikon
TV commercial for something Nikon calls Scene Modes. Casio has had that
feature for a while, calling it Best Shot. All I'm really saying is
that the Casio name isn't something that would make me shy away from a
camera, and there are several things that make it attractive.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
