My sons computer just started acting up. It's a P4 2.4g on an Asus P4P8X
865P mb that we built last summer, and it's worked fine up til now.
When he turns it on, the fans go on for just a split second, and then
everything shuts down and nothing happens.

The case is a cheap Raidmax that was only $37 including the 350W power
supply, so we're thinking maybe the power supply is bad.

Is there some way to check that short of putting in a new one and trying
it?

Any other thoughts on what the problem could be would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

Jack

When you say the fans turn on, does this mean you have opened the case and
checked to see if the CPU fan starts up. Many motherboards have a CPU fan
protection circuit. If the CPU fan fails to spin up to the required RPM, it
shuts down the system to protect the CPU.

If that isn't the problem, I would replace the power supply with a quality
one anyway. At 37 dollars for a case and PS, you're not getting the quality
that you want for that nice a system. Wrong place to save money.

Might be too much startup current draw (from motor-driven stuff starting
from stop), and that is interpreted by the PS as a short.

Wrong place to save money, if the PS turns out to be at fault.

HD, no case fans, no cards, etc.) Just for a short time; heat won't be
an issue.
