Hi everybody!
I'm trying to connect 2 pcs together with the following configuration:
PC1:It has a LAN card plus all the standard
ports(serial,parallel,USB,soundcard)
PC2:It has a modem plus all the standard
ports(serial, parallel,USB,soundcard) but it doesn't have a LAN card.
Is there a way to connect the 2 pcs together without having to buy any
extra parts(for example a "null modem" cable)?
Is there a way to connect the LAN card to the modem and use some kind
of software to make them comunicate?
Is there a software that could make the 2 soundcards of each computer
work like modems and comunicate?
Thanks for reading my post!
I hope someone has a good idea for connecting the 2 pcs.

Do you plan to steal a null modem cable?! Wink Just kidding.

Sorry, you can't change a soundcard into a modem, not yet anyway. Are you
looking to make a long-term connection here, or something quick and dirty to
transfer a few files? What OS? For example, it's pretty easy to hook-up
two MS-DOS 6.22 based machines via either a serial or parallel cable (null)
and using the built-in lnkservr.exe. On the other hand, you would have to
consider something like Laplink (over serial, parallel, or USB) for Win98 or
XP. But both these represent temporary solutions, it's best to communicate
over ethernet were possible. No matter what you do, you'll always have to
have *some* software to support the communications, whether it's serial,
parallel, or USB, so it's hard to imagine a truly FREE solution (MS-DOS 6.22
is readily available @ <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bootdisk.com," target="_blank">http://www.bootdisk.com,</a> making it the one exception,
but of course, this limits your transfer/comm options severely compared to
Win98/XP).

The simplest and cheapest solution is simply to pick up a $5-10 10/100BaseT
PCI network card, or even USB or PCMCIA version if it's laptop. You can
then patch the PCs together via $2 crossover cable. You'll also be able to
gain Internet access on the LAN-less PC by sharing the modem on the other PC
(assuming you have Win98 or XP, and ICS enabled). We're talking VERY little
money here, hardly worth spending time on some other convoluted solution.

You can try using the USB ports. Just need the cable and the software, i
guess.

I think this will be useful: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/usbmain.htm" target="_blank">http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/usbmain.htm</a>
