Post subject: "Crossgrading" VA-503+ --> PA-2013
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>fic (more info?)

Hi all,

I recently found (?) a PA-2013 v2.0 and an ATX case/PS. I Already have
a VA-503+ with a K6-2 500 (100x5) on it. I was thinking of "cross
grading" all the components on the VA to the PA to get the new ATX
power supply and USB etc.

My questions:

1. I installed WinXP SP1 on the VA with the "press the F key and
select Standard PC" option (I am using the "hacked" APM bios); will
that be a problem if I just swap the HD over to the PA? Maybe it will
just detect the new power options and install the drivers off the CD?
Yes?

2. Given that the lastest BIOS for the VA isn't always the one that's
mentioned on the FIC website, whats the latest BIOS for the PA-2013?

TIA!

Question 1:
----------------------------
I am not sure exactly what will happen. One possibility is that Windows
will detect the new motherboard with the ACPI BIOS and install all the
drivers from that, including the ACPI HAL. The other possibility is that
Windows will detect all the devices, but leave the Standard PC HAL alone.
If this is the case, you can always go back into the Device Manager -->
Computer --> Standard PC --> Driver --> Update Drivers to install the ACPI
HAL.

Note that you can go only from Standard PC to ACPI through the Device
Manager. If you want to go from ACPI to Standard PC, you must do an
"in-place upgrade" of Windows XP -- that is, reinstall Windows on top of
itself, doing the F5 thing along the way.

If you decide to stick with the Standard PC HAL, you can still get the
computer to turn itself off when you shut down. Go to Control Panel -->
Power Options --> APM --> Enable Advanced Power Management Support.

If you do switch to ACPI, you may see some events in the Event Viewer that
state the "ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port
address". These messages can safely be ignored. Basically, Windows XP
does not allow the ACPI BIOS to access certain I/O ports, and FIC never
upgraded the BIOS to accomodate this. It's no big deal, though. We've
been running a VA-503A like this for years, no problems.

Question 2:
-----------------------
You can find the latest BIOS at
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="ftp://ftp.fic.com.tw/motherboard/bios/socket7/pa-2013/" target="_blank">ftp://ftp.fic.com.tw/motherboard/bios/socket7/pa-2013/</a> . It appears that
the newest BIOS is JI4333, which supports the K6-2+ and K6-III+ processors
and adds support for hard disk drives up to 137 GB.

Hope this helps.

I believe changing machine definition from ACPI to STD PC, or vice
versa, will cause problems due to resource re-allocation (IRQ's in
particular), and an in-place upgrade should be performed with either
move.

Here is a link to the Microsoft Knowledge Base where they state that you
can go from Standard PC to ACPI in the Device Manager, but not the other
way around:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810903" target="_blank">http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810903</a>

....and here is one where they advise against it:

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;234558" target="_blank">http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;234558</a>

I guess they didn't have the same guy review the articles. Wink

Personally, I would try it through the Device Manager first. If it
doesn't work (for example, your computer does not boot), you can always do
an in-place upgrade to repair it. Might as well try the easy way first.

I have an APM version based on the latest BETA BIOS for the PA-2013, too.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.geocities.com/tcsenter/ji4333apm.zip" target="_blank">http://www.geocities.com/tcsenter/ji4333apm.zip</a>

You may have to copy the URL and paste it into your browser vs. clicking on it.

Good luck,

Tim
