Hi,
I'm having a problem writing to the this dual layer DVD writer. It's
recognised by the BIOS and Windows XP but I keep getting communication
failures reported by Nero after about writing 7%. Luckily, I bought two
(one for another family member). I tried that but got the exact same
problem.

I've updated the firmware but this hasn't made a difference. I read
somewhere that it doesn't like being an IDE slave and likes to live on it's
own IDE channel. I've tried this, but it didn't make any difference.

The one thing I can think of is that I'm running a striped pair of SATA
drives and a 250GB ATA (on the primary IDE channel).

Has anyone had any similar problems?

Many thanks,

Steve

If you check the aopen forums this unit had many problems, and as far
as I know was not released in Japan. You might want to RMA the drives
and get something else, these drives are known as problematic.
Consider Nec or Pioneer, as they seem to be well priced.

I am seeing one common factor in everyone's complaint about the AOpen DUW1608/ARR................NERO.

After some troubleshooting (i.e., switching drive from slave to master and vice versa, using different blank DVD's, downloading every software update and driver update, blah, blah, blah), I came to realize that NERO apparently does not like this model over time.

My actual problem came after I upgraded from Nero 6 to Nero 7 Ultra.

My solution: Use a different CD/DVD Burning Software.

My solution was rather complicated, though it worked. I used Nero to create the DVD structure and saved it using image recorder and saving the image on my hard drive. After that, I used Alcohol %120 to then burn the image to disk.

I tested on my DVD player and it played just fine.

I know that my method was a bit complicated, but unless someone else can suggest something that actually works, that's going to be my procedure for the time being.

In other words, use my method, buy new CD/DVD Burning Software or buy a new DVD Burner.............that is unless AOpen or Nero can get together and fix this glitch.

Just do a search, and you can download a trial version of Alcohol %120.

Hopefully, this helps those with a similiar problem with their AOpen Burner.
