Post subject: questions about DVD-RAM and 2 sided DVDs
Archived from groups: alt>comp>hardware, others (more info?)

The guy I spoke to at my local Futureshop showed me that LG dvd burner
they had that supported DVD-RAM and that some type of DVD-RAM media you
could write on both sides. He told me he didn't have them though. I've
made a few phone calls at my local retailers and none of them had any.
My question is, are those things available to the public yet? and where
could I buy them online?

I was also wondering, are dvd-ram the only type of dvds that you can
write on both sides? Are 2 sided dvds available in the +/- R/RW formats?

yes they are called DVD-10 (normal DVDR is DVD-5)
4.38GB per side.
Some movies have been released as DVD10 also. Starship troopers being one
that comes to mind, also an old 2 part miniseries called "V" .

So a 2 sided DVD-R is called a DVD-10. What about a 2 sided DVD-RW. Do those
even exist?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

That's bizarre as I've always DVD-ROMs refered to with siliar
designations...never any writiable formats.

If it were up to me however, I'd likely avoid any DVD-RAM based players.
They won't play in regular DVD players and portability would be important to
me.

You can buy double-sided cartridge type, but you'll need to remove them from
the cartridge to be used in your drive, and it's not going to be easy keeping
both sides uncontaminated. You really need a cartridges type burner, like the
Panasonic SW-9572 or a Stand alone Recorder.

DVD_RAM 9.4 gig is a standard format (two-sided) readily available in the
US.

What do you mean "not going to be easy"? Just handle them only on the edges
and when not using, put them back in their cases. See, if you youngsters had
the experience of handling Original Master LPs back when they had something
called a "turntable" like me, you'd have no fear about handling something a
lot more durable like a Compact Disc...hehe.

I bought a 5 pack of two sided removable cardtridge EMTEC DVD-RAM more
than 6 months ago for under $50. I use them 5 days a week on my two
Panasonic recorders DMR-E20 and DMR-E50 to record my soaps and VH1
videos which I then rerecord to permanent DVD-R. often I open the
cartridges to use the ram disc in my Panasonic LV50 player when I go
to the spa to do aerobics. I have yet to have a single failure on any
of the discs. I believe they are available on Meritline where I think
I bought them. I'm convinced that EMTEC is one of the more superior
discs on the market.

Some Linux magazines have had 2-sized cover DVDs, so they can exist for
things other than DVD-RAM.

It is, however, quite flexible, in that it uses VR format (rather than
Video). Also, it is playable in a PC, provided the software you have
understands that VR format.

And any DVD-RAM based player will also write DVD-R (panasonic) or DVD-R
and DVD-RW (JVC).
