I had a problem like that with nero, some sort of software conflict I guess. I
un-installed it and installed easy cd creator by adaptec and all is well. Don't
know why I had the original problem but I assumed it was the software since
different software fixed it.

Is it some reboxer brand like IO magic or Khypermedia etc?

I would get the latest firmware and try using the recommended media.
Also get the latest update on the burning software you are using -
NERO.

And look under device manager to see that , theres nothing weird.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Might want to try disabling anti-virus programs and anything else that hogs
system resources while burning...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
