Any guesses as to what I am doing wrong? I have three PCs here running AMDs
on three difference K7S5As with no problems, all built by yours truly. My
brother also has a K7S5A that developed a problem. His primary IDE port
died, so we ordered a new Pro board from NewEgg. New board was installed
and failed to POST. Took it out of the case, hooked up only the floppy and
video card, and I got the CPU fan to spin, but no initial beep and no video
output. Using single 256MB Crucial 266 DDR memory and an Athlon 900, both
from the old working setup. If I reinstall the old board, it works OK
except for the dead port. So I returned the board for an exchange. New one
came today. Exact same problem. Inside the case, no POST, no spin. Out of
case, the CPU fan will spin, but no video and no happy POST beep. It's rare
enough to get a bad mobo, but two in a row? With the same symptoms? I
tried clearing CMOS on both boards with no impact. I switched the video
card, no change. I don't have any spare DDRs here, but I may try swapping
in a 256 PC133 in place of the DDR and see what happens. Any ideas? If I
return this board, I'm not going back to the K7S5A, so I'd be interested in
alternatives for the AMD 900 belonging to brother dearest. >> Stay informed about: Two Dead K7S5A Pros? |

I saw a big stack of return K7S5A Pro's at my Local Frys
Bought two of those myself, one work fine,
the other one I can not turn the computer off or the bios loses its
settings.

I found a stack of ECS motherboard boxes at Houston Frys with
stickers indicating that the unit was returned and then either
repaired or found to have no problems. Fortunately, I also found what
appeared to be new boxes, one of which I bought to go with my amd
2200.
For a fee, they will check out the board, but I don't remember how
much.

For what it's worth, I found out that the board booted fine with an AMD
2200+ on board, but would not boot with the AMD900 my brother sent to me.
That 900 works fine in a non-Pro K7S5A board. I jumpered the CMOS too, to
make sure the board was booting at 100/100. As long as I have the 2200+ CPU
in, all is fine.
