Post subject: Dead power supply problem on S2460
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>tyan (more info?)

Hi all,

I've got a S2460 (rev1.0) with 2 XP1800+
The pbm is that the power supply stops after a few hours of running.
Besides the power supply won't restart after, it remains dead I've tested it
at the output connector.
This is the 3rd power supply that dies in my system, where is the problem ?
- is it a power supply issue ? I've tried standard ATX 300W and 350W, should
I go up to 400/450 ?
- is it a mainboard issue ?

I read that the PS should deliver mini 30A on the 5V, I don't know if my
last PS fitted these requirements or not...Could it be the problem ?
By the way, when the PS dies, there is no smoke, no smell, and the
connectors are not burned. I've tried to run the system with minimum
components (just RAM, HD, video) to minimize the power consumption but same
result...

Hope you can help Wink

Regards

Well, hello Phil!

I've just had exactly the same problem. However, I've just upgraded my
power supply to a Ritmo 450W (which has 35amp on the 5v line). I put the
power supply in, turn it on, it runs for a few minutes, then dies. No
smoke, no frying, no burned connectors, nothing. It will not restart
either. I'm on my second power supply now, and do not know what to do.

I tried a minimal system the second time, but it still happened.

dual MP 1800+ CPUs, 768Mb RAM.

HELP!!

I have an S2460 working fine for about 2 years now with an Enhance 460 Watt
PSU and 2 x MP 16600+ CPUs. I bought this brand to replace my old Enermax
431 Watt unit which had the ATX connector meltdown problem. Does your
existing PSU still work in other PCs? Do you have any way of testing it out?

Although some lower capacity PSUs (under 400 Watts) do make the grade in
terms of that 30 A requirement on the +5 Volt rail, many will be working at
maximum capacity under those circumstances, this is bad for PSU longevity.
It's best to get a PSU with capacity in reserve for this reason, it also
allows for system expansion down the track, should you want to. If your
existing PSU has died and you do need to buy another, I suggest one of these
Enhance units or something even more powerful. Make sure you buy it from a
supplier with a good warranty return policy/practice.

It's important that you check for any accidental earthing inside the system.
Make sure there are no bare wires or metal touching the motherboard or
components anywhere other than in designated connection areas.

I've just ordered a 450W PSU with 30A on the +5V...I'll tell you the result
in a few days, if it lasts more than one hour Wink

I'm going to put it in another casing to be sure, and I'll check carefully
about this, thanks for the advice

Thanks Paul,

That gives me an idea about my motherboard, I might check the seating, even
though I've fitted hundreds of them. It is a new case, so perhaps it might
be touching. Wouldn't there be other effects from this though? I've fitted
another power supply and it still works, although this was my original
failing one.

Ah well, there goes that idea! Pulled the back of the casing off and
checked the clearance, and there was plenty. Off to the shops tomorrow for
a new power supply. Any Australian available Power supplies recommended?

Hi!

it's not a known brand (someting like "topelite" ?) and it costs something
like $45
I can't afford to invest in a very good PSU as long as I'm not sure the mobo
itself is not defective.
I asked the Tyan support, they answered me that I had to be sure the mobo is
not touching the case.
I'll put everything in a new case...then wait and see

Here's a link to the one I'm using - note that the newer "B" Revision below
this is NOT suitable because it doesn't meet the 30 A Requirement for the +
5V Rail. http://www.enhance.com.tw/products-eps12v.htm#ens0246

You could email them and ask for Aussie distributor details. Since the PSUs
are made in Taiwan, there's bound to be plenty for sale down under.

Hi Phil,

Can you let me know how you go with:

a. The power supply, and

b. Getting back to Tyan if it doesn't work, because I'm probably going to
have to contact them as well.

Thanks

Hi,

I've got good news : everything seems to works fine !
the PSU is a noname, 350W, 35A on the +5V
it's too early to say I have no more problems, because I haven't tried my
initial configuration with SCSI controler and disks.
I'll be back to you in a few days with more informations, and hope still
with good news Smile
