Post subject: Dell cd-r/rw burner can only play- how can I make it burn?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>hardware>cd-rom (more info?)

I have a Dell Dimension 8100 which has a Sony CRX160E CD-R/RW built
in. I found this computer and it was missing it's hard drive, so I put
one in. I don't know very much about PCs so I am trying to get help
figuring out how to activate the device as a CD burner. I can play
CDs and CD-roms, but I am not sure what to do to make it usable as a
burner. Do I need a driver or a program? Should I be able to download
a driver from Dell, or from Sony? Should I be looking for Adaptec Easy
CD Creator 4 or some Roxio program? I was able to find a Dell
Dimension ResourceCD but it did not seem to have anything that would
make the CD burn discs. Thanks for any help or clues! (The device
manager does not show a cd-recorder icon.)

If I understood you correctly, you have a CD Rom reader.
In order to 'burn' CD's you must have a CD-RW type disk.
If you have the hardware to burn CD's you must also have the
software. If you purchase a CD Rom drive with the capability
to burn CD's, it should have the software with it; then
all you need to do is to install that software. Usually it
is a CD by the manufacturer (but not always), but it should
have software with it.

If you have merely a CD reader, you cannot make it into a CD
burner by merely using software, or did I miss something in
the original poster's query?

My apologies, I misunderstood your question. Since you have
the CD-RW
type drive, you only need the software from Nero, Roxio, Sony,
etc. They
are about the same and differer mainly in personal preference.
Many people
like Nero.
