Actually I'm not that interested in the technical
difference as I am in knowing if there's a reason
I should be using one over the other. Both formats
are easily available and the cost is about the same.
The burner I have can write to both formats and the software
I have can deal with both without any interaction on my
part. I've used both and they all seem about the same.

Is there a reason for me to care??

Only if you are going to try to give someone an with an older (ie
purchased in 2003 or older) dvd player a video dvd to play. some of
the older players will only recognize -R dvds.
