Has anyone tried the official 4.8s with a Radeon 8500 or 9100? Have you had
good results or is it just asking for trouble?

I have .. ATI Radeon 9200 . Works great .. however,
and I don't even pretend to understand this. WinXP seems to have to "learn"
the driver. I swear this is true.
You will need to reboot and run something that needs
high level video several times .. maybe 3 or 4. And
any funny stuff will clean up nicely.

This is something I've noticed, but it seems to be related to the older
driver and dll clutter. Same experience on Radeon 9100, Radeon 8500 and 9800
Pro. XP needs 2 to 3 restarts for the driver to act "normal" in 2D and 3D. I
recently upgraded to a new 120gig HDD and did a complete fresh reinstall of
XP. When I installed the newly downloaded Catalysts for the first time,
everything went the way it was supposed to. But it still took two restarts
for completely 2D behavior. But this time everything in the ATI control
panel installed properly and worked normally. I prefer the ATI cards to the
Nvidia ones, but the Nvidia drivers are much easier to live with and switch
back and forth. I tend to stick with one particular Catalyst version due to
the pain in the ass factor associated with this type of behavior. At least
XP has the driver rollback function for the odd time it doesn't work
properly.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
