Post subject: External power supply for an XPC?
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>shuttle (more info?)

Greetings,

Like many of you, I have an XPC with an anemic 200W PS. I need at least
250W for a video card upgrade. I've got lots of ATX power supplies but of
course they won't fit. A shuttle PC40 PS runs over $60. I'm wondering, is
it possible to use an ATX power supply as an external power supply for my
XPC by extending the cables? What about grounding issues?

I'm sure someone have been tempted to try this in the past when they watched
their XPC sputter with a new video card in it.

I'd appreciate any stories you have to tell on the subject and links to
applicable webpages. My Googling has been unsuccessful so far.

Thanks much,

Big Sky

I just replaced my "smoking" power supply in my EPOX Mini Me XPC lookalike.
Ran the cables from an elcheapo standard 400w PS in thru the hole that the
power fan left and everything worked fine. Only prob I had on my system was
not enough air being pulled over the HD so I added a fan. Looks REALLY ugly
but it only has to last till next year when I buy new harware for Vista.

Paul,

So the cables were long enough? I assume you just set the power supply on
top of the EPOX case. Hmmm. Sounds like a good idea. I won't need to add
a fan to the XPC because removing the PS only means losing a little 1"
diameter fan. The CPU cooling system would remain in place. I'd just have
to use some duct tape to seal the hole left by the PS. Maybe I could
finally run my Radeon 9800 Pro in the XPC but it would probably appreciate a
breathing hole in the side to bring in cool air for the GPU. What a guy
will do for his son...

Thanks,

Big Sky,

On my box putting the power supply on its side and the cables were just the
right height and plenty long enough. I had a 9800 XT in there already Maybe
thats what blew my power supply

I'm just hoping the Shuttle motherboard uses the standard 20 pin and 4 pin
connectors for motherboard power. I seem to remember they were different in
that way plus there is a molex plug attached to the motherboard.
