These 2 are within £20 of each other, so which is the best buy.
Gaming and video is the main use

Oh man. Consider yourself lucky you have decided to come here for advice on
this. Of course it all hinges on exactly how powerful the rest of your
system is. On a Pentium4 3.2ghz, the 6800GT (and it is called a 6800GT not
a 8600GT, and it's not a FX either, it's a Geforce6) is about two times
faster than an FX5900Ultra. That's right, TWICE as Fast. So the decision
is simple.

Check these benchmarks:

Cool, cheers for the heads up.
only down side now is I have realised the price on the 6800GT was for the
PCI-E version, and the AGP version is substantially more money (Doh)
Maybe wait a bit till the 6600 AGP is available.

You sure you weren't looking at the price of the PCI Express 6600GT?
Not the 6800GT?

I don't see the price gap situation changing anytime soon. Actually ever.

By the time 6600 AGP's are out, FX5900's will be even less desireable and
the price of those will surely continue to fall. You're always going to
have to pay more for 6600 and 6800 and rightly so!
