Post subject: GA-7N400-L1 problems.. need help..
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>giga-byte (more info?)

I have been putting a new machine together for XP Home.

I have the following parts -
AMD 2600
GA-7N400-L1
GeForce 4 8x AGP -128M
on board sound.
400w PSU
2x 256Meg Memory.

Firstly. I can't get the system to boot properly.. usually have to switch on
then hit the reset button before it will boot. All my components are
recognised.. BUT .. my CPU is only showing as 1.24G.

I managed to get XP to install. but it is a bad one. When I put a boot disc
in A drive to try and format the C drive it isn't found.. a B drive that
'rotates' with the A drive is.

I can't find any settings in the BIOS that might alter what I'm getting!

Any ideas please?

TIA

Mo

hi

i have the boot problem also, i think that is caused by low voltage under
boot up sequence. i got this after i instlled a 8x ati radeon 9700pro. to
much load under boot up. (i have autoboot when pwr goes on...)

your disk problem i dont know, check all ide cables and if you're useing
raid enable it in bios and select it as boot disk in the bios also.

Thanks for the response CoCo

I'll try another case/power supply today. I'm hoping that it will 'cure' CPU
problem as well, there is only the CLK_SW switch on the board to change the
CPU rating.

I've realised that the boot floppy won't 'see' the C drive NTFS!

Have Googled for info on reformatting for FAT, trying that later.

hi

i have lived with the no first-boot issue a long time now (since i uppgraded
my gf). it looks stable, kind of. just to press start button and wait 5-10
sec and then reset. dont know if this will go away with a new (expensive)
psu! this may also be dependent of the mb design.

I have got a new tower with a 350W PSU.. similar to the one I have been
using.. I booted it when I had got to the motherboard installed stage.. got
a reassuring beep.. I'll post if it does the trick..

the new tower is about the same as the other.. I still can't get the CPU
2600 showing.. have got it to 1.666 by changing the FSB .. I reckon the
Mobo/bios is the problem.. looks as though I'll be looking for another.

Mo,

If its the 333FSB version of the XP2600, you will need to go into the
'Frequency settings' option in the bios and set the FSB to 166
manually on this board. Then your processor speed should show up
correctly.

Thanks galaxy,

I got the memory changed this morning.. it now boots better.. I got XP
installed... it won't do a reboot when windows says...I have to fiddle about
to boot.. I still have a 'feeling' about the mobo.

I wondered what the FSB setting should be.. played around a little. Will
check that out this evening.

Possible to have fanless 7N400 Pro2 ? - I want to have a quiet PC and have been looking at the Asus A7N8X motherboard. It has a fanless heatsink on the northbridge chip. Is this the exact same northbridge chip as the Gigabyte 7N400 board? If so then is it ok to take the fan of the 7N400?
