I'm somewhat new at this and guess a lot of you have done this many times
but I would like to know "specifically" how to upgrade the nvidia driver.
I currently am using version 94.24 on WinXP with two 7800GTX in SLI mode and
was thinking of upgrading to the latest 163.71 only because the game I have
"BioShock" says it would work better.

I really don't see any problems now with the driver I have but really wanted
to know how to upgrade if I decide to without getting into trouble. This is
only thing nvidia's web site states which still seems a little vague to me.

Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any
drivers.

a.. Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing
the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.

a.. Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display
drivers from the Windows Control Panel. Browse to the Start Menu > Windows
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display
Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove.

One of my questions is after uninstalling the current driver, do you reboot
into regular mode or safe mode? Does it matter? Do I need to reboot at all
after uninstalling? Anything else I should know?

Thanks,
Randy

Remove the drivers through add-remove programs.
You should be prompted to reboot, if not, reboot anyways. ( I have never
found necessary to reboot to safe mode).
Upon bootup, windows will identify new hardware, and offer to search for
drives. Cancel out anytime it asks for this.
Install the new drivers by double clicking the file ( drivers) you
downloaded.
You will be prompted to reboot again.
You " may" have to change your display settings back to where you had them,
along with any settings like Anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, etc.

Don't sweat it, it really is fairly easy to do.

Many people reboot into safe mode just to keep anything else from
running when they install the newer drivers. In safe mode, you don't
have to worry about your anti-virus, spyware apps, or any other
utilities messing with the installation. I don't use safe mode, but I
do ALWAYS reboot after the un-install, and after the re-install. When
it reboots after the un-install, Windows will want to find drivers for
your card. Cancel that dialog box (multiple times if necessary), then
run the setup routine for the drivers you want to use.

All I've ever done is install the new drivers on top of the old ones.
Never had an issue. If you get confused, just try that and see what
happens.
