Hey, I am back. Hope the sheep are safe and happy. Anyway, my old ST6R
gave up the ghost (blown caps). Time to build a new system. Clue me in on
whats the latest and greatest.

Help me spec this out. All I have is a case. <VBG>

The latest and greatest is probably the Intel Core 2 duo and quad cores,
but if you are looking for bang for the buck, an AMD X2 3800+ dual core is
only about $59. It will overclock easily to 4400+ or faster speeds.

I think I will stick with Intel. Probably Core 2 Duo E6600. I am not going
to overclock. I am past that. What's a good Abit board these days? I
would like to do about 4 GB of memory. Any recommendations on PS and Video?

Jerry -

I don't put no scoop in the poop. Too easy to forget where the scoop has
been when it's time to serve up ice cream.

Especially Rocky Road flavor.

I learned that from Qed. You've seen the full fare at The Pit®, haven't
you?

http://pages.sbcglobal.net/jefn/the-pit.html

I'd say Abit's probably still worth having. Not that I've build a system in
quite a while, mind you .. the RSI has gotten too bad to write my name, much
less work small tools in tight places. But you're an expert working small
tools into tight places, right?!?!?!?

At any rate, might be worth a look at Abit's forum for some ideas on a new
build. Maybe even post a thread on the Hardware Recommendation page (and,
hell, you might even find Richard Hopkins hanging out there these days).
This place has been pretty quiet, except when Abit's forum is down. And,
since declaring the newsgroup to be abandoned property and acquiring title
through adverse possession (squatters rights), I've begun charging some
pretty hefty user fees for on-topic postings. Gotta pay the bills, you
know.

Good to see you about.

Much of the activity seems to have transferred over to the Abit USA web
forum. Must be all those nice colours, and the ability to edit your posts!

Abit very much still worth having. A lot depends how much you want to spend
and how far you want to overclock, but the AB9 QuadGT is arguably the best
performing 965 based design on the planet. The IP35 Pro is better than the
QuadGT in some ways, worse in others. On balance little to choose between
them. The AW9D series are established and stable.

The forthcoming IX38-Max and IX38-QuadGT should be killer, the same board
but one with DDR3 and the other with DDR2 sockets.

Beyond that, if you want a low cost/MATX/media center/etc rig, plenty of
options beneath the above in the ranges.

E6600 is an excellent choice if you want good all-round performance without
having to screw the last kilohertz out of everything. If you want to
overclock for the sheer hell of it, E6320/6420 will give you that feeling of
achievement.

Beyond that, what you wanna know?! Very Happy

Depends on what you want in features, really. I'm currently also looking at
upgrading my NF7S to some thing a little .... gruntier. It's my 3rd generation
of Abit boards. But I think I will abandon Abit this time around. I want a
board with _2_ PATA channels. Which precludes the 965 chipset and leads me to
the NVidia650i.
I also want a serial port at the back of my box, thank you very much, since I
don't want to throw away a lot of good expensive hardware; be it UPS, be it
external dialup modem for emergencies or testing ... and that shuts out Abit's
650i board. Too many things missing, never mind the performance (which is
pretty good, according to TomsHardware).

Asus sounds - um - flakey these days. Lots of people moaning and complaining
about some of their boards. That company sure seems to have its ups and downs:
they turn out a bunch of crack boards for a while, then turn out some that look
like they were build while on crack. I've had one of each in the past Wink

So I think I'll go Gigabyte this time round. Their 650i board has everything
they could fit in, com, parallel, 2xide, best power pipes (6) in its class, all
solid caps. Sounds pretty good to me. Performance differences overall seem
minimal between brands, so I decided to go with the features I want, not to
mention that I have not seen _anyone_ moan about problems with this board
(yet). And I expect I'll stick a 6420 into it, and probably spend what I saved
there on a 8800gts 320 video card.

I have an external modem and a UPS (both of which use serial) to hook up
to a M2N-E SLi (which has one serial port). My previous motherboard had
two serial ports. I have a USB-serial converter, but it does something
which causes the UPS to power off whenever Linux inits the USB ports
during the boot sequence. This is obviously unacceptable. So I
switched them -- modem on the USB-serial thingy, UPS on the real serial
port. Works fine that way.

Hey Richard,

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, it's a sorry state of affairs for UseNet these
days. That's too bad.

At this point I decided not to pursue an upgrade. I swapped out what parts
I could from a couple of old systems and put together a decent enough Linux
box. I use it mostly for internet and some office work, so it's plenty
adequate. I think I will save up my pennies and get a Mac eventually. Yes,
I am trying to become Windoze free.
