Post subject: Help with Motherboard Drivers
Archived from groups: alt>comp>periphs>mainboard>giga-byte (more info?)

I think I messed Up! I let the Computer Retailer where I bought all
the parts for my Custom Computer build the Computer for me. I bought
the Gigabyte 81PE1000 Motherboard with Intel 865PE Chipset. Specs are
Intel 2.8 GHC 800MHZ CPU, 1 Gig of Kingston 400 Ram (2 Matched Pair of
512), Maxtor 160 GB Sata HD, ATI AIW 9600 Pro 128, Plextor Px-708A DVD
8X Burner, Sony DVD/CDR Burner, Creative Audigy Ls SB, Creative MDM
Blaster 56K V92 PCI in a Enermax 400W case running Windows XP.

I asked them to insure that they installed the latest Bios for the
motherboard because I had read somewhere that The Agp 8X would not
work right without it. They told me they would check this. I
received the Computer. They shipped all the retail boxes for above
components and the software that was included.

After reading the user's Manuel for the motherboard I realized they
had not installed the Motherboard utilities. After looking at the
driver file details in Control Panel - Devices for the motherboard it
appears they let Windows Xp install its drivers for the motherboard.
They even let XP install a Generic modem driver even though they
shipped the correct Modem and Motherboard drivers. The good news is
everything is working and there are no conflicts noted. The only
problem is the Modem will not correct above 33bps. My Old computer on
the same phone line connected 90% of the time above 42bps. There is a
new driver for the modem but it will not install, giving a message
that the driver does not match the hardware.

Questions: Could this be some kind of issue because of incorrrect
motherboard drivers? How can I tell if my AGp is running at 8x? Can
I just update the drivers for the motherboard by going thru control
panel and update driver? Should I install the Motherboard Utilities
or will this cause problems now that everthing is configured. I guess
I should reformat and start all over but the old adage of If it Ain't
broke - don't fix it comes to mind. Sorry for the long post, Any and
all advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

During its install process XP installs its "default" un-optimised
motherboard drivers. After XP has installed you can then install the
manufacturers motherboard drivers (downloads are going to be fresher then
those on the install disk), more than 9 times out of ten there are
absolutely no problems in doing this.

Regards checking that your AGP is in 8x mode, firstly dont get too hung-up
if its not, but you can check by: Right click on the XP Desktop, select the
settings tab from the dialog that appears and then click on the "Advanced"
button. A second dialog will no appear, select "SMARTGART" and on that page
you'll be able to see your current AGP speed.

Unfortunatly the modem problem is trickier, though at least it is a decent
modem and I imagine someone in here can walk you through how to do this.
