I thought this repeating clunk followed by a whistle was the sound of
drive failure. It stops when I cut power. I ordered a new identical
replacement drive and the same thing happens.

Drive: Western Digital Caviar SE 16 250 GB ATA II
MB: Asus A7N8X deluxe (nForce 2 SPP)
SATA: Silicon Image Sil 3112A

What could this be? Could a sata port have failed? Here's I
possible
hint. Once this happened, the BIOS splash screen suddenly appeared.
It never did before. I reloaded the bios optimal defaults with no
change.

Sounds like not enough power from the power supply. Tried a different
connector or another power supply? To know for sure, don't connect the SATA
wire to the MOBO, just the power to the drive. If it still makes the noise,
then your power supply isn't supplying enough power, and the drive is
starved.

The power supply is Antec 430 watt. Overkill for this system.

Strange result now. I successfully restored a validated backup to the
drive and now cannot boot. I can access the bios while post appears
normal until it tries to boot (verifying dmi pool). The boot drive is
not recognized. Boot to cdrom works. How can this be?

Something happened to the mainboard since the bios reset at the same
time this issue first occurred.

A failure at verifying dmi pool often indicates a mobo failure
